Game Components:
Game Board: A central board depicting the palace wall with five rows.
Tiles: Rectangular tiles in five different colors, representing different patterns.
Factory Displays: Discs representing various colors of tiles.
Score Markers: Tokens used to track players' scores.
Setup:
Prepare Factory Displays: Depending on the number of players, randomly fill the factory displays with four tiles each from the tile bag.
Central Board Setup: Place the central board in the center of the play area.
Score Marker Placement: Each player places their score marker on the "0" space of the scoring track.
Objective:
The goal of Azul is to earn the most points by strategically selecting and placing tiles on your personal player board.
Gameplay:
Factory Display Selection: On their turn, a player must choose tiles of one color from any one factory display or from the center of the table (representing discarded tiles).
Tile Placement: After selecting tiles, the player must place them on one of the five rows of their personal player board. Tiles in a row must be of the same color and cannot be moved once placed.
Scoring: After placing tiles, players score points based on completed horizontal or vertical lines of tiles on their player board. Players also score points for completing sets of the same color in each row and column.
End of Round:
Once all players have selected tiles from the factory displays and placed them on their player boards, the round ends.
Any tiles left on the factory displays are moved to the center of the table.
End of Game:
The game ends after the completion of a round in which at least one player has filled an entire horizontal row of their player board.
Players then score additional points for completed sets of tiles and for any remaining tiles on their player boards.
The player with the highest total score wins the game.
Advanced Variant:
Azul also includes an advanced variant called "The Wall," which introduces additional scoring opportunities and challenges for experienced players.
Strategy:
Tile Selection: Strategically choose tiles to complete sets on your player board while denying tiles to opponents.
Placement Planning: Plan ahead to ensure efficient placement of tiles to maximize scoring opportunities.
Set Completion: Focus on completing sets to earn bonus points and trigger the end of the game.
Azul combines simple rules with deep strategic gameplay, making it accessible to players of all skill levels while offering depth and replayability. With beautiful components and engaging gameplay, Azul is a modern classic that is sure to delight board game enthusiasts.
