Clank! Catacombs is a cooperative game where players work together to explore the Catacombs and escape. Here's how to play:

Objective: In Clank! Catacombs, players take on the roles of daring adventurers exploring a dangerous catacomb to steal valuable artifacts. The goal is to escape the dungeon alive with the most valuable loot, while avoiding the attention of the dragon and the risk of being knocked out.

Setup:

  1. Players: 2-4 players.

  2. Components:

    • Modular dungeon tiles, which will be revealed and placed as players explore.

    • Adventure deck with cards representing skills, movement, and combat abilities.

    • Player pawns, health trackers, Clank! cubes, and starting decks.

    • Artifacts, minor and major secrets, market items (backpack, key, crown).

    • Dragon marker and dragon bag with dragon cubes.

  3. Starting the Game:

    • Each player receives a starting deck of 10 cards, a pawn, and Clank! cubes of their chosen color.

    • Place the dragon marker on its starting space on the rage track.

    • Shuffle the adventure deck and place it in the middle of the play area, revealing six cards to form the dungeon row.

    • Place the starting tile on the table, and each player places their pawn on the starting space.

    • Place the artifacts, secrets, and market items face down on the board in designated spaces.

Gameplay:

  1. Player Turns:

    • On your turn, play all the cards in your hand. Cards provide three main resources:

      • Skill: Used to acquire new cards from the dungeon row.

      • Swords: Used to fight monsters in the dungeon row or on the board.

      • Boots: Used to move your pawn through the catacombs.

    • Exploring: As you move, you may reveal new tiles by moving into unexplored spaces. Place a new tile, aligning it with existing tiles, and resolve any effects or encounters.

    • Acquiring Cards: Use skill points to acquire new cards from the dungeon row. New cards go into your discard pile to be shuffled into your deck later.

    • Fighting Monsters: Use swords to defeat monsters in the dungeon row or on the board. Defeating monsters gives you rewards such as gold or reduces the number of dragon attacks.

    • Clank! and Dragon Attacks: Some cards and actions cause you to make noise, represented by adding Clank! cubes to the Clank! area. When a dragon attack is triggered, all cubes in the Clank! area are placed into the dragon bag, and a number of cubes are drawn. If your color is drawn, you take damage.

  2. Collecting Artifacts and Treasures:

    • Your goal is to collect valuable artifacts and other treasures scattered throughout the catacombs. Artifacts are the primary source of points, but they take up space and make your escape more challenging.

    • You can also buy items like backpacks (to carry additional artifacts), keys (to unlock secret areas), and crowns (worth points).

  3. Escaping the Dungeon:

    • After collecting an artifact, you must make your way back to the starting tile to escape. If you escape, you stop taking turns but continue to participate in dragon attacks.

    • If you take too much damage and your health tracker reaches zero before escaping, you are knocked out. If you are knocked out outside the dungeon, you survive but don't earn bonus points. If inside, you're out of the game.

  4. Winning the Game:

    • The game ends when all players have either escaped or been knocked out. Players then total their points from artifacts, treasures, and cards in their deck.

    • The player with the most points wins the game.

Variations:

  • Solo Play: Play the game solo by facing off against an AI opponent or by trying to beat your own high score.

  • Team Play: Pair up with another player and combine your points to compete against another team.
