Gameplay
Twilight Imperium is played over a series of rounds, with each round divided into several phases.
1. Strategy Phase
Choose Strategy Cards: Players choose from a set of strategy cards that determine the order of play and grant special abilities during the round. These cards also dictate when certain phases of the game occur, such as building or technology research.
2. Action Phase
Player Turns: Players take turns performing actions, including:
Tactical Actions: Moving ships, engaging in combat, and conquering planets.
Strategic Actions: Activating the ability on their chosen strategy card.
Component Actions: Using the special abilities of units, technologies, or faction powers.
Passing: Once a player has no more actions to take, they may pass, ending their turn for the round.
3. Status Phase
Claim Objectives: Players claim public and secret objectives if they meet the criteria, earning victory points.
Refresh Planets: Planets used for resources or influence during the round are refreshed and available for the next round.
Score Points: Victory points are tallied, and the game continues until a player reaches the target score.
4. Agenda Phase (optional)
Galactic Council: If players control Mecatol Rex, they may enter the Agenda Phase, where they vote on galactic laws that can alter the rules or provide bonuses.
Voting: Players use the influence from their controlled planets to vote on agenda cards, which can have far-reaching effects on the game.
Winning the Game
The game ends when a player reaches the predetermined number of victory points, usually 10. Victory can be achieved through military conquest, diplomatic maneuvering, technological advancement, or economic dominance.
Strategy Tips
Diversify Objectives: Work on both public and secret objectives to maximize your chances of scoring points.
Control Mecatol Rex: The central planet offers significant strategic advantages but often becomes a battleground.
Diplomacy and Alliances: Forming temporary alliances and negotiating with other players can be key to survival and success.
Technology Advancement: Investing in technology can give your faction a decisive edge in combat and other aspects of the game.
Fleet Management: Carefully manage your fleet's size and position to defend your territory and project power across the galaxy.
Example of a Turn
Choose Strategy Card: Select the "Warfare" strategy card to move and attack with extra efficiency.
Move Ships: Move your fleet into a neighboring system and initiate combat with another player’s forces.
Combat: Roll dice to resolve the battle, using your ships’ combat values and any applicable technology bonuses.
Conquer Planet: After winning the battle, land ground forces on the planet to take control of it.
Claim Objective: At the end of the round, you claim a public objective for controlling three planets outside your home system, earning a victory point.
Variants and Advanced Play
Custom Galaxy Setup: For a more strategic setup, players can draft and place system tiles in a specific order rather than randomly.
Expanded Agenda Phase: Introduce additional agenda cards for more complex and impactful galactic politics.
House Rules: Many groups develop their own house rules to balance or speed up gameplay based on preferences.
Twilight Imperium offers deep, strategic gameplay that can last several hours. Each playthrough is a unique experience shaped by player interactions, the evolving board, and the objectives pursued.
