Official Skull King by Grandpa Beck's Rules
Skull King is a thrilling trick-taking game with a pirate theme, designed by Grandpa Beck’s Games. The game involves players predicting the number of tricks they can win in each round. Correct predictions earn points, while incorrect predictions result in penalties. Here’s how to play:
Objective
The objective of Skull King is to score the most points by accurately predicting the number of tricks you will win in each round over the course of 10 rounds.
Setup
In the second round, each player is dealt 2 cards. Continue this pattern, increasing the number of cards dealt by 1 each round, up to 10 rounds where each player is dealt 10 cards.
1. Players: Skull King can be played with 2 to 6 players.
2. Deal Cards:In the first round, each player is dealt 1 card.
3. Choose Starting Player: Determine the starting player by any preferred method (e.g., youngest player, highest card draw).
Card Types:
Number Cards (1-13): These are the standard cards in the game.
Escape Cards: These cards allow you to avoid winning a trick.
Pirate Cards: These cards can win against all numbered cards but lose to the Skull King and mermaid cards.
Mermaid Cards: These cards win against all cards except the Skull King.
Skull King Card: The highest-ranking card that wins against everything except the mermaids.
Gameplay
Bid Phase:
After looking at their cards, each player simultaneously reveals a bid indicating how many tricks they believe they will win that round.
Players show their bids by holding out their fists and revealing the number on the count of three.
Play Phase:
The starting player leads the first trick by playing any card from their hand.
Players must follow suit if they can. If they cannot, they may play any card.
The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a special card (Escape, Pirate, Mermaid, Skull King) is played.
Special Cards:
Escape Cards: These cards automatically lose the trick.
Pirate Cards: These cards win against all suits and number cards except for the Skull King and mermaid cards.
Mermaid Cards: These cards win against all cards except the Skull King.
Skull King Card: This card wins against everything except the mermaid cards. If multiple special cards are played, the order of strength is considered (Skull King, Mermaid, Pirate, Escape).
End of Trick:
The winner of the trick leads the next trick.
Play continues until all tricks in the round are completed.
Scoring:
Correct Bids:
Each player who exactly matches their bid scores 20 points for each trick they bid.
Additionally, a bonus of 10 points is awarded for each correct bid.
Incorrect Bids:
Each player who fails to match their bid loses 10 points for each trick they missed by.
Special Bonuses:
Skull King Capture: Capturing the Skull King card in a trick scores a 50-point bonus.
Pirate Captures Skull King: If a Pirate captures the Skull King, the player scores an additional 50-point bonus.
Mermaid Captures Skull King: If a Mermaid captures the Skull King, the player scores an additional 100-point bonus.
All Tricks Won: If a player bids 0 and wins no tricks, they score a bonus of 10 times the round number (e.g., 50 points in round 5).
Winning the Game
The game ends after 10 rounds.
The player with the highest total score at the end of the game is the winner.
Strategy
Bid Wisely: Pay close attention to the cards in your hand and the number of tricks you can realistically win.
Track Cards: Keep an eye on the cards played by your opponents to better predict their strategies and adjust your play accordingly.
