Ping pong, also known as table tennis, is a fast-paced indoor sport played on a table divided by a net. Players use small paddles to hit a lightweight ball back and forth over the net, aiming to score points by landing the ball in the opponent's side of the table. Here are the detailed rules for playing ping pong:

Equipment:

  • Table: A regulation-size ping pong table with a net dividing it into two equal halves.

  • Paddles: Small paddles with a flat hitting surface, also known as bats or rackets.

  • Ball: A lightweight ping pong ball made of celluloid or similar material.

Setup:

  1. Table Dimensions:

    • The ping pong table is 9 feet long, 5 feet wide, and 2.5 feet high, with a net stretched across the center.

    • The net is 6 feet long and 6 inches high, suspended above the center of the table.

  2. Racket Selection:

    • Players or teams select their paddles and balls before the match begins.

Gameplay:

  1. Starting the Game:

    • A coin toss or another method is used to determine which player or team serves first.

    • The serving side starts the game from the right-hand side of the table.

  2. Serving:

    • The server stands behind the end of the table and serves the ball diagonally to the opponent's side.

    • The server must toss the ball at least 6 inches in the air before striking it with the paddle.

  3. Rally:

    • After the serve, players or teams hit the ball back and forth over the net, aiming to land it on the opponent's side of the table.

    • The ball must bounce once on each side of the table during the rally, except for serves and volleys.

  4. Scoring Points:

    • Players or teams score points when the opponent fails to return the ball within the rules.

    • Points are scored regardless of which side serves.

  5. Faults:

    • Faults occur when a player:

      • Fails to hit the ball over the net.

      • Hits the ball out of bounds.

      • Fails to return the ball before it bounces twice on their side.

      • Commits other rule violations, such as touching the table with the paddle.

  6. Rotation:

    • In singles play, players alternate serves every two points.

    • In doubles play, players rotate positions after each point is scored, with the server and receiver switching places.

  7. Winning the Game:

    • A game is won by the first player or team to reach 11 points, with a margin of at least 2 points.

    • A match typically consists of the best of five games.

  • Service Rotation: Ensure proper service rotation to maintain fairness and equality between players.
