Azul: Summer Pavilion is a tile-laying game where players use colorful tiles to construct a beautiful summer pavilion, scoring points based on the patterns they create. Here's how to play:

Objective

The objective is to score the most points by skillfully placing tiles on your player board to complete patterns and collect bonuses.

Components

  • 132 Tiles (22 in each of the 6 colors: blue, red, green, yellow, purple, orange)

  • 4 Player Boards

  • 9 Factory Displays

  • 1 Scoring Board

  • 4 Scoring Markers

  • 1 Starting Player Marker

  • 4 Point Counters

  • 1 Round Counter

  • 1 Round Tracker

  • 1 Cloth Bag

  • 1 Rulebook

Setup

  1. Player Boards: Each player takes a player board and a scoring marker in their color. Place the scoring markers on the scoring track of the scoring board at 0.

  2. Factory Displays: Place the 9 factory displays in the center of the table.

  3. Tiles: Put all 132 tiles into the cloth bag.

  4. Starting Player Marker: Give the starting player marker to the player who last visited a summer pavilion or determine a starting player randomly.

  5. Round Tracker and Counter: Place the round tracker and round counter near the factory displays.

  6. Draw Tiles: Draw 4 tiles from the bag and place them on each factory display.

Gameplay

Turn Structure

The game is played over six rounds, each consisting of the following phases:

  1. Factory Offer Phase:

    • Players take turns in clockwise order.

    • On your turn, choose one factory display or the center area. Take all tiles of one color from your chosen source and place them in your supply.

    • Move the remaining tiles from the factory display to the center area if you took tiles from a factory display.

    • The first player to take tiles from the center area also takes the starting player marker but places one tile from their chosen color into the discard pile.

  2. Building Phase:

    • After all tiles have been taken from the factory displays and center area, players proceed to build.

    • Players may use tiles from their supply to fill spaces on their player board.

    • Each space on the player board shows a specific color and number. To place a tile on a space, you must spend the exact number of tiles of that color as indicated by the space.

    • You can use one wild tile (the color of the round) to replace any tile in the cost.

  3. Scoring Phase:

    • Score points immediately after placing tiles on your player board.

    • You score points based on the number of tiles adjacent to the newly placed tile:

      • 1 tile: 1 point

      • 2 tiles: 3 points

      • 3 tiles: 6 points

      • 4 tiles: 10 points

      • 5 tiles: 15 points

      • 6 tiles: 21 points

  4. Preparation for Next Round:

    • Move the round tracker to the next round.

    • Draw 4 tiles from the bag for each factory display and refill them.

    • The player with the starting player marker begins the next round.

End of Game

The game ends after the sixth round. In addition to regular scoring, players receive bonus points for completed columns, rows, and all spaces of a single color:

  • Completed column: 7 points

  • Completed row: 10 points

  • All spaces of one color: 12 points

Bonus Tiles

  • Certain spaces on the player board provide bonus tiles when covered. Draw these tiles from the bag and add them to your supply immediately.

Special Rules

  • Wild Tiles: Each round has a specific wild color indicated by the round tracker.

  • Leftover Tiles: At the end of each round, any leftover tiles in a player's supply are kept for the next round, but exceeding the limit of 4 leftover tiles results in a penalty of losing points.

Tips and Strategies

  • Plan Ahead: Look ahead to future rounds' wild colors and plan your tile placements accordingly.

  • Balance Immediate vs. Long-term Scoring: Weigh the benefits of scoring points immediately against setting up more valuable scoring opportunities in later turns.

  • Bonus Spaces: Prioritize covering bonus spaces to gain extra tiles, which can provide a significant advantage.

Azul: Summer Pavilion offers a fresh take on the tile-drafting genre with its focus on pattern building and bonus tiles.
