Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals is an expansion to the base game of Carcassonne, introducing new tiles, a sixth player, and additional scoring opportunities with inns and cathedrals. Here's how to play:

Objective

The objective remains the same as in the base game: to score the most points by strategically placing tiles and followers to build cities, roads, monasteries, and farms. This expansion introduces inns and cathedrals, which can increase the value of roads and cities respectively.

Components

  • 18 new Land tiles

  • 6 Point tiles (50/100)

  • 8 Followers (1 for each color, including a new color)

  • 6 Large Followers (1 for each color)

  • 1 Abbot (gray)

  • 1 Rulebook

Setup

  1. Combine Tiles: Mix the new Land tiles with those from the base game.

  2. Distribute Followers: Each player receives 1 additional Follower and 1 Large Follower in their color. The new player receives a complete set of followers in the new color.

  3. Set Up Point Tiles: Place the 50/100 point tiles near the scoring track for use during the game.

  4. Determine Starting Player: The rules for determining the starting player remain the same as in the base game.

New Gameplay Mechanics

Inns

  • Inns on Roads: When a road tile with an inn is placed, it increases the value of that road.

  • Scoring with Inns: Each road segment with an inn scores 2 points per tile instead of the usual 1, but only if the road is completed. If the road is not completed by the end of the game, it scores no points.

Cathedrals

  • Cathedral Tiles: These are special city tiles that increase the value of the city.

  • Scoring with Cathedrals: A city with a cathedral scores 3 points per tile and 3 points per pennant instead of the usual 2. However, if the city is not completed by the end of the game, it scores no points.

Large Followers

  • Placement: Large followers are placed like regular followers but count as two followers for the purpose of majority control in cities, roads, and monasteries.

  • Scoring: They score points like regular followers.

Game Play

The gameplay follows the same turn structure as the base game with the following steps:

  1. Draw and Place a Tile: Draw a tile from the stack and place it on the table following the usual placement rules.

  2. Place a Follower: Optionally place one of your followers on the newly placed tile. This can be a regular or large follower.

  3. Score Completed Features: Score any completed roads, cities, or monasteries. Features completed with inns or cathedrals score double points if completed, but zero points if incomplete.

End of Game

The game ends when all tiles have been placed. Players then score incomplete features (roads, cities, monasteries, and farms) as follows:

  • Incomplete Roads with Inns: Score 0 points.

  • Incomplete Cities with Cathedrals: Score 0 points.

  • Regular Incomplete Features: Score as per the base game rules.

Scoring Summary

  • Completed Roads with Inns: 2 points per tile.

  • Completed Cities with Cathedrals: 3 points per tile and 3 points per pennant.

  • Large Followers: Count as two followers for control purposes.

  • Incomplete Features without Inns/Cathedrals: Score normally.

Tips and Strategies

  • Use Inns Strategically: Place inns on roads you are confident you can complete to maximize your points.

  • Risk and Reward with Cathedrals: Use cathedrals to boost your cities’ scores, but be aware of the risk of scoring zero if you cannot complete them.

  • Leverage Large Followers: Use your large follower to gain control of valuable features or to challenge your opponent’s control.

Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals enhances the base game by introducing new scoring opportunities and strategic challenges.
