Official Mysterium Rules

Mysterium is a cooperative whodunit board game where one player, the Ghost, acts as a spirit trying to communicate with a group of Psychics (the other players) to reveal who murdered them, where it happened, and with what weapon. It relies on abstract imagery and deduction for the Psychics to solve the mystery. Here's a breakdown of the rules:

Objective: In Mysterium, players cooperate to solve a mystery. One player takes on the role of the ghost, who tries to communicate with the rest of the players, the psychics, through visions (illustrated cards). The psychics aim to reconstruct the events of the night of the murder to determine the identity of the murderer, the location of the crime, and the murder weapon.

Components:

  • 1 game board

  • 1 screen (for the ghost)

  • 84 vision cards

  • 54 psychic cards (18 character cards, 18 location cards, 18 object cards)

  • 6 intuition markers (one per psychic)

  • 36 clairvoyance tokens (6 per psychic)

  • 6 clairvoyance level markers

  • 6 sleeve markers

  • 1 sand timer

  • 3 crow markers

  • 1 clock board

  • 4 progress boards

  • 1 clairvoyance track

  • Various tokens and markers

Setup:

  1. Role Selection: Choose one player to be the ghost. The rest are psychics.

  2. Screen and Cards: The ghost sets up the screen and arranges the vision cards behind it. The ghost also draws one culprit (character), one location, and one object for each psychic, without revealing them.

  3. Clock Board: Place the clock board in the center and set the time to 1:00.

  4. Psychic Setup: Each psychic takes their intuition marker, clairvoyance tokens, and clairvoyance level marker.

  5. Psychic Cards: Place character, location, and object cards on the table according to the number of players.

  6. Clairvoyance Track: Place the clairvoyance track and markers on the table.

Game Play: The game is divided into seven hours (rounds), each consisting of three phases: Vision, Interpretation, and Progression.

  1. Vision Phase:

    • The ghost draws vision cards and gives one or more cards to each psychic, attempting to guide them toward their character, location, or object.

    • The ghost may use crow markers to discard and draw new vision cards if necessary.

  2. Interpretation Phase:

    • Psychics analyze their vision cards and place their intuition markers on the character, location, or object they believe the visions indicate.

    • Psychics can use their clairvoyance tokens to agree or disagree with other psychics' interpretations.

  3. Progression Phase:

    • The ghost reveals whether the psychics' guesses are correct. Correct guesses allow psychics to move to the next phase (character, location, or object). Incorrect guesses mean they remain in the current phase.

    • Clairvoyance tokens are resolved and tracked.

Clairvoyance Points: Psychics earn clairvoyance points by correctly predicting other psychics' guesses. These points help in the final round of the game.

Final Round: Once all psychics have correctly identified their character, location, and object, the game proceeds to the final round.

  1. Culprit Selection:

    • The ghost selects three vision cards to represent the true culprit, location, and object.

    • Psychics vote on the most likely culprit using their intuition markers.

Winning the Game:

  • If the majority of psychics correctly identify the true culprit, the players win the game. If they fail, the ghost's true message is lost, and the game is lost.
