TRAILS is a delightful game of hiking and collecting resources in beautiful national parks. Players explore the trail, gather resources, and take photographs, aiming to score the most points by the end of the game. Here's how to play:

Objective: The objective is to score the most points by collecting resources, taking photographs, and completing badge objectives.

Components

  • 1 Trail Board

  • 5 Trail Tiles

  • 1 Bear Token

  • 4 Hiker Tokens (one for each player)

  • 1 Trailhead Tile

  • 1 Trail End Tile

  • 1 Sun Token

  • 1 Resource Die

  • 4 Player Boards

  • Resource Cubes (wood, stone, acorns)

  • 1 Camera Token

  • Photo Cards

  • Badge Cards

  • 1 Rulebook

Setup

  1. Trail Board Setup:

    • Arrange the Trailhead Tile and Trail End Tile on opposite ends of the play area.

    • Shuffle the 5 Trail Tiles and place them in a line between the Trailhead and Trail End Tiles to form the trail.

    • Place the Bear Token on the middle Trail Tile.

  2. Resource Setup:

    • Place the resource cubes (wood, stone, acorns) and the Resource Die near the trail.

    • Place the Camera Token on the Trail End Tile.

  3. Player Setup:

    • Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding Hiker Token and Player Board.

    • Place all Hiker Tokens on the Trailhead Tile.

    • Deal 3 Photo Cards to each player and place the remaining Photo Cards in a deck near the trail.

    • Shuffle the Badge Cards and place 3 face-up next to the trail. Place the remaining Badge Cards in a deck nearby.

  4. Sun Token:

    • Place the Sun Token on the Trail End Tile. The Sun Token will move towards the Trailhead Tile as the game progresses.

Gameplay

The game is played over a series of turns, with each player taking the following actions on their turn:

  1. Move Hiker:

    • Move your Hiker Token along the trail. You can move up to 2 spaces forward or 1 space backward.

    • If you land on a tile occupied by another hiker, you must pay 1 resource cube to that player (if possible).

  2. Trail Tile Actions:

    • When you land on a trail tile, you can perform the action indicated on that tile:

      • Resource Tiles: Collect the resources shown on the tile (wood, stone, acorns).

      • Photo Tile: Spend resources to take a photo. Draw a Photo Card and place it in front of you.

      • Badge Tile: Spend resources to claim a Badge Card. Place it in front of you.

      • Wildlife Tile: Roll the Resource Die and collect the resource rolled.

  3. Bear Movement:

    • If you land on a tile with the Bear Token, move the Bear Token to an adjacent tile of your choice.

  4. Sun Movement:

    • When your Hiker Token reaches the Trail End Tile, move the Sun Token one space towards the Trailhead Tile.

    • The game ends when the Sun Token reaches the Trailhead Tile.

Scoring

At the end of the game, players score points based on the following:

  • Photo Cards: Each Photo Card has a point value.

  • Badge Cards: Each Badge Card has a point value and may provide additional points for specific conditions.

  • Resources: Unused resources may provide additional points (as indicated on some Badge Cards).

Winning the Game

The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Tips and Strategies

  • Resource Management: Balance collecting resources with spending them on Photos and Badges to maximize your points.

  • Movement Efficiency: Plan your moves to efficiently use the trail tiles and avoid paying resources to other players.

  • Bear Token: Use the Bear Token strategically to block opponents or move it to beneficial tiles for yourself.
