Beach volleyball is a dynamic two-on-two sport played on a sand court. The perfect game for a day at the beach. Here's how to play:
Team Composition
Number of Players: Each team consists of two players.
Positions: Players are not restricted to specific positions. They can switch roles and locations freely.
Scoring
Match Structure: Matches are typically played best of three sets. The first two sets are played to 21 points, and the third set (if necessary) is played to 15 points.
Point System: Rally scoring is used, meaning a point is scored on every serve regardless of which team served. Teams must win by at least two points.
Serve
Service Order: The right to serve is determined by a coin toss at the beginning of the match. The team that wins the toss chooses to serve or receive first.
Service Rules: Players must serve from behind the end line. The serve can be underhand or overhand, and the server can stand anywhere along the end line.
Play
Touches: Each team is allowed a maximum of three touches to return the ball over the net. A block does not count as a touch.
Contact Rules: Players can hit the ball with any part of their body. However, they must not catch, hold, or throw the ball.
Net Rules: Players cannot touch the net during play. However, incidental contact with the net by a player's hair or clothing is not considered a fault.
Rotation
Serving Order: Players do not rotate positions. Instead, the player who served previously continues to serve until their team loses a rally.
Player Movement: Players can move anywhere on their side of the court during a rally.
Faults
Serving Faults: A serve is a fault if the ball touches the net and does not go over, goes out of bounds, or the server steps on the end line before hitting the ball.
Playing Faults: Faults occur if the ball lands out of bounds, a team takes more than three touches, a player touches the net, or the ball is carried or thrown.
Court
Dimensions: The court measures 16 meters long and 8 meters wide, divided into two equal halves by a net.
Net Height: The net height is 2.43 meters (7 feet 11 5/8 inches) for men and 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 1/8 inches) for women.
Timeouts
Number of Timeouts: Each team is allowed one 30-second timeout per set.
Technical Timeout: In sets 1 and 2, a technical timeout is taken when the total score of both teams reaches 21 points. There is no technical timeout in the third set.
Other Rules
Coaching: Coaching is not allowed during play.
Ball: The official ball is slightly larger and lighter than indoor volleyballs, designed specifically for beach play.
Beach volleyball is a fast-paced and exciting sport that requires skill, teamwork, and athleticism.
