Hasbro Gaming Catch Phrase Game is an electronic game with 5,000 words and phrases that's fun and challenging for family and friends to play. Try to get teammates to guess the word or phrase that appears on the screen by describing it any way possible -- but do it fast! Here's how to play:

Number of Players:  Designed for 4 or more players.

Objective:  Be the first team to reach 7 points by successfully getting your teammates to guess the hidden word or phrase displayed on the electronic unit.

Components:

  • Electronic Catch Phrase game unit

  • Word list booklet (may vary depending on the version)

  • Scoreboard with Team 1 and Team 2 buttons

  • Batteries (usually not included)

Setup:

  1. Install Batteries (if needed):  Following the instructions, install the required batteries into the electronic unit.

  2. Form Teams: Divide players into two even teams.

  3. Choose a Starting Team: Decide on a team to start the game.

  4. Clear the Scores: Press both the Team 1 Score and Team 2 Score buttons simultaneously to reset the scoreboard to zero. The unit will announce that both teams have zero points.

  5. Select a Category (Optional):  Some electronic Catch Phrase versions have category buttons (e.g., Fun and Games, Entertainment, Everyday Life). Teams can choose a category of words or play with all categories included ("Everything").

Gameplay:

Here's how the electronic Catch Phrase game unfolds:

  1. First Turn: The first player from the starting team picks up the electronic unit and holds it face down.

  2. Press the Advance Button:  The player presses the "Advance" button on the unit. This will reveal a new word or phrase on the screen.

  3. Clue Giving:  The player holds the unit up towards their teammates (but not facing them) and starts describing the word or phrase using any verbal clues they can think of.  They cannot say any part of the word or phrase itself, rhyme with the word, or give away the number of syllables.

  4. Teammate Guessing:  The teammates try to guess the hidden word or phrase based on the player's clues. There's no time limit for guessing, but the faster they guess correctly, the better.

  5. Correct Guess: If a teammate guesses the word or phrase correctly, the player holding the unit should press the "Correct" button. The unit will play a sound and display the word or phrase for a moment. The team scores a point, and the scoreboard will update.  The unit automatically advances to a new word after a few seconds.

  6. Pass the Unit:  The player holding the unit passes it to the next player on their team. This player will take their turn with a new word and try to get their teammates to guess it.

  7. Wrong Guesses: If teammates can't guess the word and give up, the player holding the unit can press the "Pass" button. The unit will play a sound effect and display the word or phrase for a moment.  No points are awarded, and the unit advances to a new word. The turn then passes to the other team.

Winning the Game:

The game continues with teams taking turns giving clues and guessing words. The first team to reach 7 points wins the game!

Bonus Rule (Optional):  Some electronic Catch Phrase versions have a bonus point feature. If the winning team correctly guesses the word after it's revealed (when they press "Pass"), they earn an additional point.

Additional Tips:

  • Be creative and descriptive with your clues, but avoid saying parts of the word or using rhymes.

  • Use synonyms, antonyms, or related concepts to help your teammates guess.

  • If the word or phrase has multiple parts, you can break it down and give clues for each part.

  • Pay attention to the timer (if your version has one) to keep the game moving.

  • Have fun and be silly! The more creative and entertaining your clues are, the more enjoyable the game will be for everyone.

That's the rules for The Catch Phrase game by Hasbro! Try to get teammates to guess the word or phrase that appears on the screen by describing it any way possible -- but do it fast!
