Scattergories by hasbro is a classic party game that challenges players to think quickly and creatively. Here are the basic rules:

Game Components:

  • Answer Sheets: Each player receives an answer sheet with numbered categories.

  • Category Cards: A deck of cards with different categories.

  • Timer: A timer to set the duration of each round.

  • Dice: A 20-sided die with letters of the alphabet.

Setup:

  1. Prepare Answer Sheets: Each player receives an answer sheet and a pencil.

  2. Select Category Cards: Shuffle the category cards and place them face down in the center of the play area.

  3. Set Timer: Set the timer to the desired duration for each round.

Objective:

  • The goal of Scattergories is to come up with unique words or phrases that fit the given categories, starting with a specific letter of the alphabet.

Gameplay:

  1. Round Sequence: The game is played over a series of rounds.

  2. Category Selection: At the beginning of each round, a player draws a category card and reads aloud the category on the card.

  3. Letter Selection: Another player rolls the 20-sided die to determine the starting letter for the round.

  4. Answering Categories: Players have a set amount of time (usually 2 or 3 minutes) to come up with answers for each category on their answer sheet, using the selected letter as the starting letter.

  5. Scoring: After the round ends, players take turns sharing their answers. Players score points for unique answers that no one else has written down. Answers that match with another player's answer score no points.

  6. Tallying Scores: After all answers have been shared, players tally their scores for the round, with one point awarded for each unique answer.

  7. Category Card Rotation: Pass the category card to the next player, and repeat the process for the next round.

End of Game:

  • The game ends after a predetermined number of rounds. The player with the highest total score wins the game.

Variations:

  • Team Play: Players can form teams and work together to come up with answers.

  • Themed Rounds: Players can choose a specific theme for each round, such as movies, food, or geography.

Strategy:

  • Quick Thinking: Try to come up with answers as quickly as possible to maximize the number of unique responses.

  • Creativity: Think outside the box and come up with unconventional answers to score points.

  • Word Association: Use word association techniques to brainstorm answers for each category.
