How to Play Quarter Match

Components

  • 142 total cards, including:
    • Quarter Match cards
    • Joy cards
    • Gold Share cards
    • Action cards
    • Customizable cards
    • Musical chase cards

Objective

Be the first player to get rid of all the Quarter Match cards in your hand. Then, complete one final challenge to win the game!

Setup

  1. Choose one player to be the dealer.
  2. Shuffle the entire deck thoroughly.
  3. Deal 8 cards face down to each player.
  4. Place the remaining cards face down in the center to form the draw pile.
  5. Take the top 5 cards from the draw pile:
    • Return the first 4 cards to the bottom of the draw pile (without revealing them).
    • Flip the 5th card face up to begin the discard pile.
  6. Determine the starting player:
    • Count 4 players clockwise from the dealer’s left.
    • That player goes first, and play proceeds clockwise from there.

Gameplay

On your turn, you must either:

  • Play 1 card from your hand that matches the top card of the discard pile, or
  • If you cannot match, draw 1 card from the draw pile instead.

Match Types

You may play a card if it matches the top discard in one of the following ways:

  • Color Match – Same card color.
  • Note Match – Same musical note.
  • Interval Match – Same musical interval.

Special Cards and Actions

Treasure Deck Cards

  • If you play a Treasure Deck card, place it in a separate face-up pile next to the discard pile. This creates the Treasure Deck.
  • Do not perform the action on a Treasure Deck card immediately.
  • To activate it, you must first:
    1. Empty your hand completely.
    2. Wait one full round (skip your next turn).
    3. On your next turn, draw the 4th card from the top of the Treasure Deck and perform its action.
If the Treasure Deck is empty when you reach this point, you win immediately!

Gold Share & Joy Cards

  • When you play a Gold Share or Joy card, you must immediately perform the action described on the card.

Winning the Game

To win:

  1. Get rid of all the cards in your hand.
  2. Wait one round (your next turn will be skipped).
  3. When it’s your turn again, take the 4th card from the Treasure Deck, and complete its action correctly.
    • If you succeed, you win the game!
    • If you fail the challenge, draw 2 new cards from the draw pile and continue playing.

Additional Card Types

  • Joy Cards: Fun, uplifting cards with positive actions. Trigger effects as soon as played.
  • Customizable Cards: Blank or fill-in cards for adding your own music theory questions, performance tasks, or trivia.
  • Musical Action Cards: These include physical challenges such as Musical Chase, combining music and physical activity like running, chasing, or mimicking instruments.

These creative additions keep the game engaging while reinforcing music theory in playful ways.

Educational Use

Quarter Match is more than a game — it’s a music learning tool! Whether you’re teaching notes, intervals, rhythm, or musical movement, you’ll find many ways to adapt and expand the game for learners of all ages and skill levels.
