How to Play 3-2-1 Countdown
Overview
Experience the thrill of discarding sets of cards and the tension of drawing from the discard pile. It can be a great reward, but it might not always go your way…
Components
- 110 Cards
- 0,10: eight cards
- 1,9: nine cards
- 2,8: ten cards
- 3, 4, 6 & 7: eleven cards
- 5: twelve cards
Game Setup
- Shuffle the entire deck thoroughly.
- Deal cards to each player based on group size:
- 2–6 players: 12 cards each
- 7–8 players: 10 cards each
- Place the remaining cards in a face-down stack in the center to form the draw pile.
- Flip over the top two cards from the draw pile and place them face up—one on each side of the draw pile—to create two discard piles.
Gameplay Overview
- The game consists of five rounds (or three rounds for large groups).
- The youngest player goes first in round one.
- Turn order rotates clockwise each new round.
- On each player’s turn, they must perform two actions:
1. Discard Cards
- Discard one or more cards of the same number onto either discard pile.
- If one discard pile is empty, you must discard there.
2. Draw a Card
- After discarding, draw one card:
- Either the top card from the opposite discard pile
- Or take a risk and draw from the top of the draw pile
Ending a Round
A round ends in one of two ways:
1. Countdown!
At the start of your turn, if your hand totals 5 points or less, lay your cards face up and declare “Countdown!”
2. Blastoff!
If your hand consists entirely of cards with the same number, discard your whole hand and call “Blastoff!”
In both cases, no additional cards are played and all players immediately reveal their hands for scoring.
Scoring
- Each player adds up the total value of the cards in their hand.
- Points are awarded as follows:
- Lowest hand value: 3 points
- Second-lowest: 2 points
- Third-lowest: 1 point
- All others: 0 points
Countdown! Bonus Rules
- If the Countdown! declarer has the lowest total, they score 4 points (3 + 1 bonus).
- If another player has a lower total, the declarer scores 0.
- In a tie for lowest hand total, tied players each get 3 points, followed by 2 and 1 point for second- and third-lowest hands.
Blastoff! Rule
- A successful “Blastoff!” scores 3 points for the player, followed by normal scoring for second and third place.
Winning the Game
- After 5 rounds, the player with the highest cumulative score wins.
- In the case of a tie, tied players play one extra round to determine the winner, while others cheer them on.
Special Rule for 2–3 Players: The first player to win 3 rounds is the winner.
Strategy Tips
- Discard high-value cards early to lower your hand total.
- Group cards by number to spot potential sets more easily.
