How to Play 99 (Ninety-Nine)
Objective
In 99, players take turns adding to a running total, trying not to be the one who pushes the count over 99. Each player starts with three tokens or items (such as coins or chips). If you go over 99, you lose one of your tokens. The last player with any tokens left wins the game.
What You Need
- 2 or more players
- A standard 52-card deck
- 3 tokens or items per player (coins, buttons, etc.)
The Deal
- Shuffle the deck and deal three cards to each player, one at a time.
- Place the remaining deck face down in the center as a draw pile.
- The player to the dealer’s left goes first, and play continues clockwise.
Card Values
Each card played affects the total in different ways:
| Card | Value / Effect |
|---|---|
| 2–8 (except 4) | Face value |
| 4 | Reverses direction of play |
| 9 | Skip the next player |
| 10 | Subtract 10 from the total |
| Jack / Queen | Add 10 |
| King | Set or keep the total at 99 |
| Ace | Add 1 or 11 (player’s choice) |
How to Play
- On your turn, play one card into the center pile and announce the new running total out loud.
- After playing, draw one card from the deck to keep three cards in your hand.
- Players continue taking turns, keeping track of the running total.
If you are forced to play a card that would make the total exceed 99, you lose the round and forfeit one token. The count resets to zero, and a new round begins.
Ending the Game
- Any player who loses all three of their tokens is eliminated from the game.
- Continue playing until only one player still has a token left — that player is the winner.
