Objective

The objective of Cucumber is to be the first player to collect a predetermined number of complete sets of cards and avoid holding the Cucumber card at the end of the round.

Components

  • A standard 52-card deck (excluding Jokers).
  • One Cucumber card (this can be any distinct card, such as a Joker from another deck, or a card with a “Cucumber” sticker).

Setup

  1. Shuffle: Shuffle the standard 52-card deck thoroughly.
  2. Add Cucumber: Add the Cucumber card to the deck and shuffle again.
  3. Deal: Deal a predetermined number of cards to each player. The number of cards dealt depends on the number of players and the desired length of the game. A common starting point is 7 cards per player.
  4. Starting Player: Choose a starting player randomly.

Gameplay

  1. Drawing:
    • The starting player draws the top card from the draw pile.
    • After drawing, the player checks if they can make any sets.
  2. Making Sets:
    • A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three 7s, four Queens).
    • A player can lay down any complete set face-up on the table in front of them.
    • Players may make as many sets as they can during their turn.
  3. Discarding:
    • After drawing and laying down any sets, the player must discard one card face-up onto the discard pile.
    • The player must discard even if they just drew the card.
  4. Passing the Turn:
    • The player’s turn is now over, and play passes clockwise to the next player.
  5. The Cucumber Card:
    • If a player draws the Cucumber card, they must keep it in their hand.
    • The Cucumber card cannot be discarded or used in a set.
    • The goal is to not be holding the cucumber at the end of the round.
  6. Ending the Round:
    • The round ends when one player has laid down a predetermined number of sets (e.g., 3 sets).
    • Alternatively, the round can end when the draw pile is depleted.
    • When the round ends, all players reveal their hands.
  7. Scoring/Determining the Loser:
    • The player that has the cucumber card in their hand, loses the round.
    • Alternatively, you can play that players gain a point for each card left in their hand, and a larger number of points for holding the cucumber.
    • The player who gets to a predetermined number of points loses the game.
    • If no player is holding the cucumber, then the player with the least cards in their hand wins the round.

Variations

  • Set Requirements: Adjust the number of cards required for a set (e.g., only four-of-a-kind sets).
  • Number of Sets to Win: Change the number of sets required to win a round.
  • Draw Pile Depletion: If the draw pile is depleted, play continues until one player is out of cards, or everyone passes a turn.
  • Progressive Difficulty: Increase the number of sets required to win each subsequent round.
  • Scoring: Create a point system for cards left in hand, or for holding the Cucumber.

Strategic Tips

  • Card Management: Pay attention to the cards other players discard. This gives you clues about what sets they might be trying to build.
  • Cucumber Awareness: Be mindful of who might be holding the Cucumber card. If you suspect someone has it, try to avoid giving them opportunities to get rid of it.
  • Set Completion: Focus on completing sets quickly to end the round before you get stuck with the Cucumber.
  • Bluffing: You can sometimes bluff by discarding a card that looks like it might complete a set for another player, causing them to discard a card they need.

Cucumber is a game of speed, strategy, and a bit of luck. Enjoy the game!
