How to Play Disney Lorcana
Objective of the Game
The goal of Disney Lorcana is to be the first player to collect 20 Lore by sending characters on quests and using various strategic card effects. Players take turns drawing cards, playing characters, and managing resources to outmaneuver their opponent.
Game Setup
- Each player needs a deck of 60 cards, consisting of Characters, Actions, and Items.
- Shuffle your deck and draw seven cards as your starting hand.
- Players may choose to take a mulligan (shuffle their hand back into their deck and redraw).
- Determine who goes first by flipping a coin or rolling a die.
- Set up the play area with space for your deck, discard pile, and Inkwell (your resource pool).
Card Types
- Character Cards: Represent Disney characters with Strength, Willpower, and Abilities.
- Action Cards: Provide one-time effects that can aid your strategy.
- Item Cards: Stay in play and offer ongoing effects.
- Ink Cards: Any card can be placed in the Inkwell to generate resources, but only cards with the ink icon can be played as Ink.
Turn Structure
Each player’s turn follows these phases:
1. Start of Turn
- Ready all your exerted (tapped) cards.
- Draw a card (first player skips drawing on their first turn).
2. Main Phase
During this phase, you may take any of the following actions (in any order):
- Add a card to the Inkwell (once per turn, face-down if it has the ink icon).
- Play Characters, Actions, and Items by spending Ink from your Inkwell.
- Use Abilities from your cards in play.
- Challenge an opponent’s Character (if your Character was played on a previous turn and is not exerted).
- Send a Character on a Quest to gain Lore (exert the Character and collect Lore equal to their Lore value).
3. End of Turn
- Any ongoing effects resolve.
- Pass turn to the opponent.
Winning the Game
A player wins when they reach 20 Lore before their opponent. If a player’s deck runs out of cards, they continue playing without drawing new cards.
Game Mechanics
- Exerting Cards: Cards must be exerted (turned sideways) to challenge, quest, or use certain abilities.
- Challenging Opponent’s Characters: Instead of questing, characters can challenge an opponent’s exerted characters. Damage dealt remains on the character permanently.
- Ink Management: Balancing which cards to use as Ink and which to play is crucial for long-term success.
- Card Effects & Keywords: Some cards have effects like Ward (protection from opponent’s effects) or Rush (can challenge immediately after being played).
Basic Strategies
- Deck Synergy: Ensure your deck has a balance of Characters, Actions, and Items to maximize efficiency.
- Ink Curve Management: Include a variety of cost cards to ensure smooth gameplay progression.
- Board Control: Use challenges effectively to remove threats while maintaining your own board presence.
- Lore Accumulation vs. Aggression: Balance between collecting Lore quickly and disrupting your opponent’s strategy.
Disney Lorcana offers deep strategic gameplay with iconic characters, making it a must-play for fans of both Disney and trading card games. Master the mechanics, build a powerful deck, and become the ultimate Illumineer!
