How to Play Egyptian Ratscrew
Overview
Type of Game: Fast-paced slapping and reaction game using a standard deck
Players: 2 or more
Goal: Win all the cards by playing quickly and slapping at the right time
The Pack
Use a standard 52-card deck. Jokers are optional—decide before the game begins if they’ll be used.
Setup
Shuffle the deck and deal all cards face down, one at a time, as evenly as possible to all players. Players do not look at their cards. Instead, keep them face down in a single stack in front of you.
How to Play
- The player to the dealer’s left goes first. On your turn, flip the top card from your stack and place it face-up in the center pile.
- If the card is a number card (2–10), play passes to the next player, who does the same.
- If a face card (J, Q, K) or an Ace is played, the next player must respond by playing another face card or Ace—within a limited number of chances:
- Jack – 1 chance
- Queen – 2 chances
- King – 3 chances
- Ace – 4 chances
- If they fail to play a face card or Ace within the required number of tries, the player who played the last face card or Ace wins the pile and adds it to the bottom of their stack. That player also starts the next round.
Slap Rules
The moment any of the following slap patterns appear, anyone can slap the pile. The first person to slap it wins the entire pile. If it’s unclear who slapped first, the hand with the most fingers on top wins.
Valid slap patterns include:
- Double: Two cards of the same rank in a row (e.g., 8, 8)
- Sandwich: A pair of matching cards with one card in between (e.g., 4, 9, 4)
- Top-Bottom: The top and bottom card of the pile match
- Tens: Two cards (consecutive or with one face card between) that add up to 10; Aces count as 1 (e.g., 3, 7 or A, Q, 9)
- Jokers: If included, jokers can always be slapped when played
- Four in a Row: Four cards in ascending or descending sequence (e.g., 5, 6, 7, 8 or Q, K, A, 2)
- Marriage: A Queen played directly over or under a King (e.g., Q, K or K, Q)
Penalty for Incorrect Slap:
If you slap when there’s no valid pattern, add 1 or 2 cards from your stack to the bottom of the center pile.
Running Out of Cards
If you run out of cards, you’re not out—yet. You can stay in the game by trying to slap back in. If you slap correctly, you re-enter with the pile you win. If you slap incorrectly while out of cards, you’re eliminated.
Winning the Game
The last player with cards remaining wins the game. There’s no scorekeeping—just slap fast and play smart to claim the entire deck.he ultimate Egyptian Ratscrew champion!
Notes/Variations
- Quick Reflexes: Sharpen those slapping skills! The faster you react to playable cards, the more cards you can collect.
- Observing Others: Pay attention to how many cards each player has remaining to gauge who might be close to running out.
- Strategic Slapping (Optional): In some variations, you can strategically slap the discard pile even on non-playable cards to disrupt other players’ rhythm or cause confusion. However, be careful not to develop a reputation for false slapping, which might lead to penalties depending on the group’s rules.
Egyptian Ratscrew is a perfect game for bringing a burst of energy and laughter to your next game night. It’s a simple game to learn but requires quick thinking, sharp reflexes, and a touch of strategy. So, shuffle the deck, get ready to slap, and see who emerges victorious in this fast-paced card game!
