What Is Eleusis?

Eleusis revolves around discovering an unknown rule created by the dealer, also known as the “god.” This secret rule dictates which card plays are valid throughout the game. Players must carefully analyze their own moves and those of their opponents to uncover the hidden pattern.

The dealer creates a secret rule that governs which cards can be played next. This rule can be any logical pattern—for example, alternating red and black cards or sequences based on even and odd values with a twist. The dealer writes this rule down but keeps it hidden from the other players.

Players attempt to play cards from their hands that fit the secret rule. If they believe they have cracked the pattern, they may declare themselves “prophet,” assuming the dealer’s role. However, guessing incorrectly results in penalties and losing the prophet status.

Game Setup

  • The dealer decides on a secret play rule and notes it down confidentially.
  • The dealer shuffles the cards thoroughly and deals 14 cards to each player.
  • The leftover cards form a draw pile for the dealer, who will play the first legal card(s) according to their secret rule. Illegal cards drawn are placed at the bottom of the deck.
  • The first player to take a turn is chosen randomly.

How to Play

Gameplay involves taking turns attempting to play cards according to the secret rule. Each play is validated by the dealer (god):

  • Legal plays are added to the main sequence of cards on the table.
  • Illegal plays are moved to a side pile beneath the last legal card, maintaining the order of play.

Markers are placed every tenth card to track the sequence.

Playing Multiple Cards (Strings)

Players may attempt to play multiple cards at once, forming a “string.” If any card in the string violates the secret rule, the entire string is rejected and moved to the sideline. The dealer only informs the player that some cards are incorrect, without revealing which ones. The player receives penalties based on the number of illegal cards played.

Penalties and Draws

  • Each incorrect card results in the player drawing two extra cards.
  • Players can declare if they believe they have no legal cards to play. The dealer checks their hand:
    • If true and they hold four or fewer cards, the round ends.
    • If true but holding five or more cards, they return their hand to the deck and receive a smaller hand of fewer cards.
    • If false, the dealer plays a correct card for them and they draw five penalty cards.

After 30 Cards Played

If no prophet has been declared after 30 cards, players who make incorrect moves are eliminated after drawing penalty cards. The game ends when one player empties their hand or all players are eliminated. Players can still declare prophet status at this point.

Prophets

Players who believe they have identified the secret rule may declare themselves a prophet:

  • This can be done only if no prophet currently exists, and there are at least two other players besides the prophet and god.
  • Once declared, the prophet takes over the role of god, judging legal plays and placing markers.
  • The prophet must play their cards openly and set aside their hand.
  • If the prophet incorrectly judges a card, they are outcast, receive penalty cards, and revert to a regular player.

When a prophet is active, elimination penalties are paused but previous penalties remain.

Ending the Game

The round ends when:

  • A player successfully discards all cards, or
  • All other players are eliminated.

Players score points based on cards remaining in their hands, and the dealer role rotates clockwise for the next round. The game continues until all players have served as god or the group agrees to end.

Scoring

  • Players subtract the number of cards remaining in their hand from the highest hand count to determine their score.
  • Empty-handed players earn extra bonus points.
  • Successful prophets earn additional points for every card played after taking over.
  • The god’s score is either equal to the highest player score or calculated based on cards played before a prophet’s takeover, whichever is higher.
  • If the game ends before a player serves as god, that player earns a 10-point bonus.

Eleusis is a great game for those who enjoy a mental challenge and social deduction. It encourages logical thinking, observation, and a bit of risk-taking as players try to decipher the hidden logic behind the card play.
