Objective

The goal of Getaway is to be the first player to discard all your cards. The last player holding cards loses the game. In some versions, this player is called “Bhabhi” (a term meaning “brother’s wife”).

Setup

1. Shuffle and Deal
  • Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
  • Deal all cards face down, one at a time, to each player.
  • Some players may have one extra card due to uneven distribution.
2. Discard Pile
  • Place an empty deck in the center as the discard pile.

Gameplay

1. Starting the Game
  • The player holding the Ace of Spades plays it face up to begin.
  • This establishes Spades as the lead suit for the first trick.
2. Playing a Card

On your turn, you must play a card onto the discard pile. You have two choices:

Follow Suit (if possible)

  • If the discard pile shows a suit (e.g., Spades), you must play a card from that suit if you have one.

Play Any Card (if you can’t follow suit)

  • If you don’t have a card in the lead suit, you can play any card.
  • This ends the trick and establishes a new lead suit for the next round.
3. Winning a Trick
  • The highest card in the lead suit wins the trick.
  • Card ranking (highest to lowest): Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
  • If no one plays the lead suit, the highest card of any suit wins.
4. Leading the Next Trick
  • The winner of the trick plays first in the next round.
  • They can lead with any card from their hand, setting a new lead suit.

Special Rule: Ace of Spades

  • The Ace of Spades is always the highest card in the game.
  • It can win a trick even if it doesn’t match the lead suit.

Getting Away

  • A player “gets away” when they discard their last card.
  • They are out of the game but can watch the remaining players.

Winning the Game

  • The first player to discard all their cards wins!
  • The last player with cards in hand loses.

Notes & Variations

1. Optional Rule – Reshuffling
  • If the discard pile runs out, shuffle and create a new draw pile.
  • If a player cannot follow suit and there’s no discard pile, they must draw one card before discarding.
2. Strategy Tips
  • Try to follow suit whenever possible to stay in control.
  • Discard low-value cards early to avoid getting stuck with them.
  • Be careful with high cards—they can be risky to hold until the end.

The key to Getaway (Bhabhi) is to try to play cards that follow the leading suit whenever possible to avoid ending your turn and potentially giving other players an advantage. Also, strategically discard lower-ranking cards to get rid of them first. Be careful not to get stuck with the high cards at the end!
