Official Glyphics Rules

Last Updated on October 17, 2025 by The Official Game Rules Team

Glyphics is a creative, fast-paced party game where players build pictures using simple pieces to represent words, actions, or phrases — and everyone else races to guess what they’ve made!

A bright, vivid blue board game box for the game 'GLYPHICS'. The title 'GLYPHICS' is written in large white font with some letters composed of small geometric shapes. The box features an energetic, abstract pattern of bright green geometric shapes like zig-zags, arrows, and straight lines, along with pink/red triangles and circles. Below the title is the tagline 'THE GAME WHERE IMAGINATION TAKES SHAPE' and the designer credit 'A GAME BY ERIC OLSEN'. The upper left corner displays player icons indicating it's for 8+ and 3+ players. The bottom right corner shows the 'OP GAMES' logo.

How to Play Glyphics

Contents

  • 40 Building Pieces
  • 150 Cards (125 Standard & 25 Easy Peasy)

Objective

Earn points by creating and guessing Glyphics — visual representations of words or actions made from the game’s building pieces!

About the Cards

Each card features six prompts.

  • Standard cards include: 4 nouns, 1 verb, and 1 phrase.
  • Easy Peasy cards include: 5 nouns and 1 verb.
A comparison graphic illustrating two difficulty levels for Glyphics word game: 'STANDARD' (on a blue card) and 'EASY PEASY' (on a red card). Both cards list different types of words/phrases: NOUNS, VERBS, and PHRASE. The STANDARD card lists: Nouns (Scrambled Eggs, Sherlock Holmes, Headphones, Lunar Rover), Verb (Panic), and Phrase (On Thin Ice). The EASY PEASY card lists: Nouns (Banana, Doctor, Flag, Cow, Wheel), and Verb (Fart). The graphic uses connecting lines to show that the Standard card uses all three categories, while the Easy Peasy card combines the word types into just Nouns and Verbs.

Setup

  1. Spread all 40 building pieces on the table or play area.
  2. Each player chooses whether to use a Standard or Easy Peasy card.
  3. Draw one card and keep it hidden from the other players — this will be your only card for the entire game.
  4. Look over your six prompts and prepare to start building!

The pieces are thin, geometric shapes, including circles, zig-zags, straight lines, spirals, squares, triangles, and stylized stick-figure representations. A corner of the game's colorful box is visible in the upper left background.

Gameplay

  1. Choose a player to go first as the Builder. Everyone else will be Guessers.
  2. The Builder selects one prompt from their card and announces if it’s a noun, verb, or phrase.
  3. Start the 60-second timer, then use the building pieces to create a Glyphic — a visual clue representing the chosen prompt.
  4. Guessers shout out answers until they get it right or time runs out.
  5. Play continues clockwise, with each player taking a turn as the Builder.

The game continues for 5 rounds. Each player will build 5 out of 6 prompts, skipping one. You can build your prompts in any order, and if a word isn’t guessed, you can try it again later in the game.

Builder Guidelines

Do’s

  • Build prompts in any order from your card.
  • Use movement by repositioning pieces to show actions.
  • Nod or point to indicate a guesser is on the right track.
  • Switch to a different prompt mid-turn if you choose.
  • Revisit a skipped or unguessed prompt in a later round.

Don’ts

  • No talking or making sound effects.
  • Don’t act out the word with your body — this isn’t charades!
  • Don’t spell words using the pieces.

Scoring

Keep score on paper or your phone.

  • 1 point for each correctly guessed noun or verb.
  • 2 points for a correctly guessed phrase.

At the end of 5 rounds, the player with the most points wins!

A group of four young adults is gathered around a wooden coffee table in a bright, modern living room, actively playing the Glyphics board game. Two people are seated in chairs, and two are sitting on the floor around the table. The table holds the Glyphics box, several small blue game cards, and a scattered array of the bright green geometric glyph building pieces. The players appear engaged and amused; one woman is pointing at the pieces, another has her hands on her head in exasperation or excitement, and a man is laughing and covering his mouth.

Overtime (Tiebreaker)

If there’s a tie, players go into a sudden-death round:

  • A player not involved in the tie builds a skipped prompt.
  • There’s no time limit, and the first player to guess correctly wins.
  • If everyone ties again — plan a group trip to Egypt! Whoever discovers a new hieroglyphic wins.

Game Variants

Want to mix things up? Try these fun alternative modes:

  • Mystery Mode: Builders don’t reveal whether their prompt is a noun, verb, or phrase.
  • Timeless Mode: Play without a timer — build until someone guesses correctly.
  • Slow Motion: Builders lose 1 point if no one guesses before time runs out.
  • 6 for 6: Instead of skipping one prompt, play all six! The game lasts 6 rounds.
  • Team Up: Divide into two teams sharing the same pieces. Each team has two Builders who agree on a prompt. Both teams race to finish first!

Tips for Better Glyphics

  • Action: To show motion like throw or catch, move an object between figures using your finger.
  • Stand: Use the stand to make 3D Glyphics! A vertical rectangle could be a door, mirror, or building. A figure in the stand could be surfing or paddleboarding.
  • Context: Add background pieces — for example, squiggly lines for water — to help clarify your creation.
  • Arrow: Use the arrow piece to indicate direction or highlight key parts (like pointing to the brim of a hat).

End of Game

After 5 rounds, tally the scores — the player with the most points is crowned the Master of Glyphics!

FAQ: Glyphics Card Game

How many people can play Glyphics?

Glyphics can be played with 3 or more players. The game is best enjoyed in small to medium groups so everyone gets multiple turns as both builder and guesser.

What’s the difference between Standard and Easy Peasy cards?

Standard cards include 4 nouns, 1 verb, and 1 phrase — making them a bit more challenging. Easy Peasy cards include 5 nouns and 1 verb, designed for quicker, simpler play or younger players.

Do I have to use all six prompts on my card?

In the standard 5-round game, each player skips one prompt. However, you can play the “6 for 6” variation if you’d like to use every prompt.

Can players talk or make noises during their turn

No. Builders can’t talk, make sounds, or use gestures from charades. Communication must come entirely from how you position and move the pieces.

What if no one guesses the Glyphic in time?

If the timer runs out and no one guesses correctly, the builder can retry that same prompt in a later round.

How are points awarded?

Builders and guessers each earn 1 point for correctly guessed nouns or verbs, and 2 points for correctly guessed phrases.

Can Glyphics be played in teams?

Yes! In Team Mode, two builders (one from each team) agree on a prompt and build it together. Both teams race to guess correctly before the timer ends.

How long does a typical game last?

A standard game of Glyphics with 5 rounds usually takes around 20–30 minutes, depending on the number of players and how quickly prompts are guessed.

Can I make my own prompts?

Absolutely! Once you’ve played through the included cards, feel free to create your own prompts for endless replayability.
