How to Play Happy Little Dinosaurs

Objective

Be the first to reach 50 points or be the last dinosaur standing by avoiding disasters and collecting points.

Setup

  • Deal 5 cards face-down to each player.
  • Separate the remaining cards into two face-down draw piles: Disaster Deck and Main Deck.
  • Each player selects a dinosaur token and places it on the starting space of their player board.

Gameplay

  1. Flip the top Disaster card face-up and read it aloud.
  2. Each player selects a Point card from their hand and places it face-down.
    • If a player has no Point cards, they must discard their hand, draw 5 new cards, and repeat the process.
  3. All players reveal their Point cards simultaneously.

Scoring

  • The player with the highest score gains points equal to their card’s value and moves their dinosaur along the Escape Route.
  • The player with the lowest score must take the face-up Disaster card and add it to their Disaster Area. They may discard one card from their hand.

End of the Round

  • Each player moves their dinosaur forward by the number of Disaster cards in their Disaster Area.
  • Draw cards until you have 5 cards in hand.
  • Discard all revealed Point and Instant cards.
  • If the Main Deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile to create a new one.

Disaster Cards

  • Disasters come in three types, plus Meteors, which act as wild disasters.
  • If you collect three of the same type or three different types, you are eliminated.
  • Meteor Cards count as any type, making elimination easier.
  • However, each Disaster card moves your dinosaur forward one space at the end of the round.

Dinosaur Traits

Each dinosaur has unique advantages and disadvantages against certain Disaster types. These adjust your score each round.

Point Cards

  • Each Point card has a value (0–9). Some also include special effects that let you draw, discard, swap cards, or change scoring rules.
  • Point card effects are used after revealing them but before scoring.
  • If multiple players have effect cards, the player with the lowest value goes first.
  • Some effects specify “During this round” (resolve before others) or “During scoring” (activate last).

Instant Cards

  • Instant cards help you survive disasters or change the game’s outcome.
  • They specify when they can be played, such as:
    • “During scoring” – Used after all Point card effects.
    • “If you would take a Disaster card” – Avoid taking one if you have the lowest score.

Ties & Sudden Death

  • If players tie for the highest score, they all earn points and move their dinosaurs forward.
  • If players tie for the lowest score, they enter Sudden Death:
    • Each tied player plays another Point card face-down.
    • Reveal the cards; the lowest value takes the Disaster card.
    • Dinosaur Traits, Point effects, and Instant cards do not apply.
    • If still tied, repeat until the tie is broken.
    • If a player has no Point cards left, they must take the Disaster card.

Inverted Scores

If a tie results in inverted scores, the highest and lowest scores swap.
For example, if two players tie for the lowest score (3 points) and the highest score is 9, the tied players now have 9 points, and the highest-scoring player gets 3 points.

Note: Inversions do not apply during Sudden Death.

Winning the Game

Win by either:

  1. Reaching 50 points on your Escape Route.
  2. Being the last dinosaur remaining after others are eliminated.

Additional Rules & Variations

  • If you have 5 Instant cards and no Point cards, discard and draw 5 new cards.
  • Only the highest and lowest scoring players are affected by score inversion.
  • Whenever you add a Disaster card, you may discard a card from your hand.
  • At the end of each round, draw until you have 5 cards in hand.
