How to Play Happy Mochi
Objective
Each round ends when one player plays all the cards in their hand. All other players score points equal to the values of their remaining cards. The game continues until one player reaches 30 total points, at which point the player with the lowest score wins.
Components
- A deck of numbered and colored cards
- A double-sided value card (showing + for “play higher” or – for “play lower”)
- Central play area with two visible cards
- Reserve slot (each player can hold one card there)
Setup
- Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player.
- Place 2 cards face up in the central play area (this is the central duo).
- Place the value card above them, showing either the plus (+) or minus (–) side to indicate the rule for this round.
- Players are not allowed to rearrange the cards in their hands after receiving them.
Game Overview
Players take turns in clockwise order. On your turn, choose one of the following two actions:
1. Draw a Card
- Draw a card from the deck and insert it anywhere in your hand.
- This is the only time you may rearrange the order of your hand (when inserting the new card).
2. Play a Pair
- Play two adjacent cards from your hand (they must be next to each other) onto the central duo.
- Your pair must follow two rules:
- Their values must be either higher or lower than the central duo, based on the value card’s symbol (+ or –).
- If the central duo is the same color, your played pair must be the same color as well.
If both conditions are satisfied, you discard your pair and replace the central duo with your two cards.
Special Rule: Happy Mochi
If you play a pair made of matching numbers (such as two 11s or two 22s), this is a “Happy Mochi.”
- It ignores the high/low and color requirements.
- You can play it at any time during your turn as a valid move.
Announce “Happy Mochi” when doing so, and proceed as normal.
Special Effects
Certain cards may trigger effects when played, including:
- Flip the value card (changing the requirement from higher to lower, or vice versa)
- Force another player to draw a card
- Place a card into your reserve slot (one card max)
- Swap cards with another player
- Pass a card to the next player
Each effect is described clearly on its card. Effects activate after a pair is successfully played.
Ending a Round and Scoring
- A round ends as soon as a player empties their hand.
- All other players add up the numbers on the cards remaining in their hands.
- That total is added to each player’s cumulative score.
- If no one has reached 30 points, shuffle the deck and begin a new round.
Winning the Game
When one or more players reach 30 points, the game ends immediately. The player with the lowest score at that point is the winner.
Strategy Tips
- Save cards with strong effects for later in the round if possible—they can swing momentum.
- Keep track of the order of your hand. Since you can’t rearrange it, every inserted card affects future options.
- Use the Draw action not just to get new cards, but to manipulate your hand’s structure.
- Time your Happy Mochi plays to block others or avoid being forced to draw.
