How to Play Mount Cleverest

Game Components

  • Hexagon tiles (each showing either a category or a point value)
  • Decks of trivia cards sorted by category and point value
  • Scorekeeping materials (paper and pen or a score tracker)

Setting Up the Game

  1. Arrange the Hexagons: Place all hexagons on the table in any pattern. They can be placed randomly showing either the category or the point value.
  2. Prepare the Decks: Shuffle the trivia decks and place them within easy reach of all players.
  3. Choose a Starting Player: The youngest player goes first.
  4. Single Category Play: If playing with only one category, place all hexagons with the category side facing up.

Tip: You can create custom patterns of hexagons for added strategy, as some hexagons may block others from being selected until they slide out freely.

Taking Turns

  1. Select a Hexagon: Choose an unobstructed hexagon that can slide out freely. Turn it over to reveal the other side, showing either a category or point value.
  2. Locked Hexagons: Hexagons that are blocked by surrounding tiles cannot be selected until they are unobstructed.
  3. Special Hexagons: There are five special hexagons in the game:
    • Picking a special hexagon allows you to choose any category for your question.
    • Special hexagons are worth double points.

Answering Questions

  1. Reading the Question: The player to your left reads the trivia question corresponding to the category and point value on your selected hexagon.
  2. Answering:
    • If you answer correctly, you keep the hexagon and earn its points.
    • You may choose to “let it ride,” attempting up to three questions in a single turn to earn extra points, but risk losing all hexagons and points from that turn if you answer incorrectly.
  3. Incorrect Answers: If you answer incorrectly, discard any hexagons and points from that turn.

Important Note: Correct answers can always be verified on the bottom right of each trivia card.

Scoring

  • Keep a running total of points for each player throughout the game.
  • Special hexagons are counted as double points.
  • The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Strategy Tips

  1. Keep track of which categories your opponents are strong in to anticipate their moves.
  2. Plan your moves around locked hexagons to access high-value or special tiles.
  3. Use special hexagons strategically to choose categories you are confident in.
  4. Consider “letting it ride” carefully—maximizing points is risky but can turn the game in your favor.
