How to No Thanks!
Objective
The goal of No Thanks! is to accumulate the fewest points by the end of the game. Points are assigned based on the numbers on the cards you end up with, so minimizing your total points is key.
Setup
1. Shuffle the Cards: Shuffle all the cards and deal 9 cards face down to each player.
2. Distribute Chips: Give each player 11 chips (including 1 “No Thanks” chip) to start.
3. Prepare the Draw Pile: Place the remaining cards face down in the center of the table to form a draw pile.
Gameplay
- Starting the Game:
- Flip over the top card from the draw pile and place it face up in the center of the table.
- The player to the dealer’s left goes first.
- Taking a Turn:
- On your turn, you have two options:
- Take the Card: You can take the face-up card and add it to your collection. If you do this, you must also take all the chips that are on the card. Add the card to your collection, and place the chips in front of you (these chips are worth points at the end of the game).
- Pass and Place a Chip: If you don’t want the card, you can pass by placing one of your chips on the card. This chip is now worth points at the end of the game. The card will remain in play, and the next player has the option to take it or place a chip on it.
- On your turn, you have two options:
- Drawing New Cards:
- After a card is taken, or after a chip is placed, draw a new card from the draw pile and place it face up in the center of the table.
- Ending a Round:
- The round ends when the draw pile is depleted.
- Players reveal their collected cards and tally their points.
Scoring
- Card Values: At the end of the game, each card’s point value is equal to its number.
- Consecutive Cards: If you have consecutive numbers, only the lowest number in the sequence counts towards your total score. For example, if you have cards numbered 5, 6, and 7, you only score the value of 5.
- Chips: Each chip you have in front of you is worth 1 point.
Winning the Game
- The game can be played in multiple rounds. After all rounds are completed, the player with the fewest points is the winner.
Notes/Variations
- Special Chips: The “No Thanks” chips do not affect scoring but are used to pass on cards.
- Tie-Breakers: In case of a tie, the player with the fewest number of “No Thanks” chips wins.
- Manage Your Chips: Decide strategically when to use your “No Thanks” chips to avoid high-value cards.
- Card Sequences: Try to collect consecutive cards to minimize your total score.
- Bidding: Use your chips wisely to make other players take cards that you would prefer to avoid.
No Thanks! is a fun and strategic game that requires careful decision-making and planning. Enjoy the challenge of balancing your card collection while minimizing your points!
