How to Play Relative Insanity
What You Need
- 400 Punch Line Cards (yellow)
- 100 Setup Cards (red)
- A way to keep score (just count cards)
Setup
First, shuffle all the Setup Cards (red) and place them face down in a pile in the center of the table.
Next, shuffle the Punch Line Cards (yellow) and deal 7 cards to each player. Put the remaining cards face down in a draw pile nearby.
Each player looks at their hand but keeps their cards secret. The game is now ready to begin.
Gameplay
The player who owns the game (or the most “funny” person in the group) goes first as the reader.
The reader draws a Setup Card from the pile and reads it out loud. This card is the beginning of a sentence or scenario, like:
“While I was at dinner, my uncle suddenly said…”
Now everyone else tries to complete that sentence in the funniest way possible using one of their Punch Line Cards.
Creating the Joke
All players (except the reader) secretly choose one Punch Line Card from their hand that they think will make the Setup Card funnier or more ridiculous. Once chosen, they pass it face down to the reader.
The reader collects all the submitted Punch Line Cards, shuffles them so no one knows who played what, and reads each combination out loud:
Setup Card + Punch Line Card = full joke.
This is usually where the table starts laughing, groaning, or questioning everyone’s sense of humor.
Choosing a Winner
After reading all the combinations, the reader picks the funniest punchline.
The player who submitted that card wins the round and keeps the Setup Card as a point.
All used Punch Line Cards go into a discard pile, and everyone draws back up to 7 cards.
Next Round
The player to the left of the reader becomes the new reader. They draw a new Setup Card and repeat the process.
The game continues like this, round after round, with everyone taking turns being the judge.
How to Win
The first player to collect 5 Setup Cards wins the game.
Quick Tips
The best results usually come from:
- Timing your funniest (or weirdest) cards carefully
- Not taking it too seriously
- Embracing the chaos—some combinations make no sense at all, and that’s the point
Relative Insanity is less about strategy and more about reading the room and leaning into ridiculous humor.
