How to Play Scout
Objective of the Game
To win Scout, you’ll need to outplay your opponents by presenting stronger sets of cards than those currently on the table. Strategic timing and smart hand management are key.
Game Setup (3–5 Players)
- Choose a starting player and give them the Starting Player token.
- Deal each player a Scout & Show token.
- Place the Scout tokens in the center of the table.
- Remove cards based on player count:
- 3 players: Remove all cards featuring the number 10.
- 4 players: Remove the card showing both 9 and 10.
- 5 players: Use the full deck.
- Shuffle the remaining deck and deal each player:
- 12 cards for 3 players
- 11 cards for 4 players
- 9 cards for 5 players
Important:
Do not rearrange the order of cards in your hand, and do not change their orientation unless the rules allow it.
Gameplay Overview
Each card has two numbers (one on each half). At the start of a round, each player chooses whether to use the front side or flip their entire hand and use the reverse side. Once chosen, the orientation must stay fixed.
On your turn, choose one of the following actions:
1. Show a Set
Play a valid set of cards from your hand to beat the current active set on the table.
- A set can be:
- Matching cards (same number)
- A sequence (consecutive numbers in ascending or descending order)
- All cards in the set must be next to each other in your hand, in their current order.
- If the active set is empty, you may play any valid set.
- If your set beats the active set, replace it and take the old set, placing it face down in front of you as points.
Set Hierarchy:
- More cards = stronger set
- Matching cards > sequences
- If equal in type and length, the set with the higher lowest-value card wins
- You cannot play an identical set to the one on the table
2. Scout a Card
Take one card from the edge of the active set on the table and add it to your hand in any position and orientation.
- You may only take a card from either end of the active set.
- The player whose set you scouted from receives a Scout token.
3. Scout and Show (Once Per Round)
Use your Scout & Show token to scout a card and immediately play a set in the same turn.
- You may do this only once per round.
Ending a Round
A round ends immediately when:
- One player empties their hand, or
- After a set is played, all other players pass or fail to beat it.
Scoring
- Gain +1 point for each:
- Set you’ve won (face-down cards)
- Scout token you’ve collected
- Lose -1 point for each card remaining in your hand
- Exception: If you ended the round by playing an unbeatable set, you don’t lose points for cards left in hand.
Start a new round with the next player in clockwise order becoming the Starting Player.
Winning the Game
After playing as many rounds as there are players, the player with the highest total score wins.
- If there’s a tie, players share the victory.
2-Player Variant
Scout can be played with two players using slightly different rules. Refer to the official rulebook at the top of the page for the 2-player setup and adjustments.
