Official Skull Rules

Last Updated on August 25, 2025 by The Official Game Rules Team

Skull is a bluffing and strategy card game where players aim to outwit their opponents while collecting the most points. The game is played with a deck of cards featuring skulls and roses. Players take turns playing cards face down, with the goal of avoiding skull cards while trying to trick others into taking risks. Each round, players can choose to challenge others to a “reveal,” testing their luck and bluffing skills. The first player to score enough points by successfully completing rounds wins.

How to Play Skull

Objective

Be the first player to win two rounds by successfully completing your bid (flipping the correct number of flower cards without hitting a skull). If no one reaches two wins, the last player remaining in the game is declared the winner.

Components

  • 6 player mats (square)
  • 24 cards (4 per player: 3 Flowers + 1 Skull)

Setup

  1. Each player receives 1 square mat and 4 circular cards (3 flowers + 1 skull).
  2. Players place their cards face down in front of them during play.
  3. Choose a starting player by any method.

Gameplay

1. Playing Cards

At the start of a round, all players place one card face-down on their mat. On their turn, players must choose to either:

  • Play another card face-down on top of their stack, OR
  • Start the bidding.

If a player begins bidding, no more cards may be played.

2. Bidding

Bidding starts with the chosen player, who declares how many flower cards they believe they can reveal without flipping a skull.

  • Play continues clockwise, with each player either raising the bid or passing.
  • Bidding ends when only one player remains—the Challenger.

3. The Challenge

The Challenger must reveal cards equal to their bid, starting with their own face-down cards first.

  • If all revealed cards are flowers, the Challenger wins the round.
  • If they reveal a skull, they fail the challenge.

Penalty for failure: The player who placed the skull secretly removes one of the Challenger’s cards from the game. (The Challenger does not see which card is taken.)

4. Winning a Round

  • A successful Challenger flips their mat to its dark side to show they’ve won one round.
  • The first player to win two rounds is the winner.

Player Elimination

  • Each time a player fails a challenge, they risk losing cards.
  • If a player loses all four cards, they are eliminated from the game.
  • If only one player remains, that player wins automatically.

Strategy Notes

  • You must always reveal your own cards before touching another player’s.
  • If a stack has multiple cards, they must be revealed from top to bottom.
  • Bluffing is key—sometimes playing a skull early or pretending you’ve used it can give you an advantage.
  • Once you are down to fewer cards, your ability to bluff effectively decreases.

Tips for Playing Skull

  • Trust no one—skulls are often played early to trap opponents.
  • Watch opponents’ bidding patterns; they may reveal clues about what they’ve played.
  • Playing more cards increases your control, since you know more of the flowers in the pile.
  • Banter, bluffing, and table talk add to the fun—Skull is best played with lively interaction.

End of the Game

  • The game ends immediately when a player wins two rounds, or when only one player remains.
