How to Play SKYJO

Overview

Ages: 8+
Players: 2–8
Game Length: 30–60 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Components: 150 cards, instructions

Objective

In Skyjo, your goal is to finish the game with the lowest total score by minimizing the points on your cards.

Setup

Set up the game at the beginning of each round:

  1. Shuffle the entire deck.
  2. Deal 12 cards face down to each player.
  3. Place the rest of the deck in the center as a draw pile. Flip the top card face up to start the discard pile.
    • If the first card is an 8, shuffle it back into the deck and flip a new one.
  4. Each player arranges their 12 cards into a 4×3 grid, face down.
  5. All players flip any two of their grid cards face up.
  6. Determine who goes first:
    • For the first round, the player with the highest combined value of their two face-up cards starts.
    • In future rounds, the player who ended the previous round goes first.

SKYJO Gameplay

On your turn, choose one of two options:

1. Take the top card from the discard pile
  • You must replace one of your grid cards with this card—either face up or face down.
  • You cannot look at face-down cards before choosing.
  • Once replaced, place the swapped card on top of the discard pile.
2. Draw the top card from the draw pile
  • Look at the card and choose:
    • Keep it and replace a grid card (face up or face down), placing the replaced card on the discard pile.
    • Discard it and flip over one of your face-down grid cards.

After taking your action, your turn ends. Play continues clockwise.

Special Rule: Column Elimination

If you have three face-up cards of the same number in a vertical column, immediately remove all three from your grid and discard them. This reduces your total score.

Ending a Round

A round ends when one player flips over all 12 of their cards. The remaining players each take one final turn.

Then:

  1. All players flip any remaining face-down cards.
  2. Add up the total points from all face-up cards.

Scoring Twist

If the player who ended the round does not have the lowest score, they must double their total for the round (only if their total is positive).

Winning the Game

After each round, players add their round score to their cumulative total.

  • The game ends when any player reaches 100 or more points.
  • The player with the lowest total score at the end of the game wins.

  • The game is fast-paced and involves a bit of luck with the cards you draw. However, some strategy comes into play when deciding whether to draw a new card or discard and flip existing cards.
