CATAN (formerly The Settlers of Catan) is a modern classic board game where players compete to build settlements, roads, and cities to reach 10 victory points. While luck from dice rolls plays a role, smart planning and sharp negotiation often decide who wins. Whether you’re a new player or a veteran looking to sharpen your skills, here are practical strategies to help you win more games of CATAN.

How to Win at CATAN
1. Start with Smart Settlement Placement
Your first two settlements are the foundation of your game. Look for:
- High-value hexes: Aim for number tokens with dots clustered around 6, 8, and 9.
- Resource diversity: Ensure you have access to wood, brick, wheat, ore, and sheep—or a clear plan to trade for missing ones.
- Expansion potential: Leave room to build toward valuable ports, open terrain, or key intersections.
Pro tip: If you’re going second, third, or fourth, your second settlement placement should compensate for what your first one lacked.
2. Balance Resource Income
Winning often comes down to your ability to produce resources consistently. Avoid having all your settlements on one number (e.g. 8), or being locked out of a key resource like brick early on. Try to cover at least 3–4 different resources across strong number tiles.
3. Prioritize Roads and Settlements Early
In the early game, building settlements gives you new resources and board control. Roads are essential to reach them—and to block opponents. You can also work toward the Longest Road bonus (2 victory points), which can swing the game.
4. Trade Wisely—but Not Generously
Trading is essential, but don’t help someone else too much, especially when they’re close to winning. Try to:
- Trade up to parity or slightly in your favor.
- Deny key trades that would let someone build a city or grab a longest road.
- Use the bank or ports to reduce reliance on player trades.
5. Know When to Build Cities
Cities double your resource income from a settlement—especially powerful if the hex is a high-producing number like 8 or 6. Build cities when:
- You have good wheat and ore access.
- You don’t have space to expand with new settlements.
- You want to keep pressure on opponents without triggering their defense.
6. Control the Robber
The robber can wreck resource flow and slow down strong opponents. Use development cards or trades to move the robber tactically:
- Block the leader’s key resource.
- Protect your own hexes when you’re vulnerable.
- Use knight cards to work toward the Largest Army bonus (2 victory points).
7. Use Development Cards Strategically
Don’t overlook dev cards. They can give you:
- Knights (for Largest Army and board control),
- Victory Points (kept secret),
- Year of Plenty, Road Building, or Monopoly (powerful mid- and late-game tools).
Buying development cards is especially strong if you lack good settlement options but have wheat, sheep, and ore.
8. Watch the Scoreboard—And Hide Your Strength
Don’t make yourself a target too early. If you hit 8 or 9 points and look threatening, other players will start blocking you and avoiding trades. Try to:
- Keep a hidden Victory Point or dev card in hand.
- Let someone else seem like the leader.
- Delay revealing your Longest Road or Largest Army if it buys you time.
9. Adapt to the Dice and Opponents
CATAN isn’t won with rigid plans. If your best number isn’t producing, shift focus. If another player is building toward a location you want, pivot or cut them off with a road. Be flexible and read the board.
Final Thoughts
Winning at CATAN takes more than luck—it takes smart planning, resource control, negotiation skill, and well-timed aggression. If you master placement, diversify your income, and keep your opponents guessing, you’ll win more games than not. Now go roll those dice and conquer the island!
