Burst is a fast-paced, push-your-luck card game designed for families, kids ages 10 and up, and adults who enjoy light strategy and party-style tension. Played with a deck of number cards, players try to avoid going over 21 while keeping high-value cards in hand to score big. How to Play Burst
Components
- 90 Number Cards ranging from -3 to 15
- Instructions included with the deck
Setup
- Shuffle the entire deck.
- Deal up to 3 cards to each player. If the deck doesn’t have enough cards, deal as many as possible.
- Select a starting player randomly or by age.
Objective
Avoid causing the center pile to exceed 21. If you do, you “burst” and score zero for that round. Everyone else scores points based on the cards left in their hand.
On Your Turn
You must take one of these two actions:
- Draw a card: Only if you have fewer than 3 cards in your hand.
- Play a card: Place a card from your hand face-up into the center row.
Update the total of the center row after each play.
Bursting
If playing a card causes the center total to go over 21, you “burst”:
- The round ends immediately.
- You score zero points.
- Everyone else keeps the cards remaining in their hand and scores their total value.
Card Effects
Some cards have fun effects on them. IF you play a card with an effect on it, the effect comes into play before the round is counted. For example if the card is “3” and the effect is “Remove a card from the center”, you may play the 3, remove a card from the center, and then the row is counted.
Ending a Round
A round ends when:
- A player bursts, or
- All players have taken their turns and passed or played all 3 of their cards.
Scoring
- If you burst: 0 points
- If you don’t burst: Add up the values of the cards left in your hand. That’s your score for the round.
You want to push your luck without going over 21. The more you hold back, the more you might score—unless someone bursts and ends the round early.
Game End
You can choose to:
- Play a set number of rounds (e.g., 5 rounds), or
- Play to a target score (e.g., first to 50 points)
The player with the highest total score wins.
