How to Play Deer in the Headlights
Objective
Be the first player to discard all your cards each round. The game continues until a player reaches 150 points, and the lowest total score wins.
Players: 2 or more
Components
- Deck of Cards – 2 full decks (standard playing cards, usually included with the game).
- 3 Custom Dice – Each die has unique symbols: numbers, cars, running deer, and deer-in-headlights icons.
- Scorepad – To track round-by-round scores, similar to bowling.
- Instructions – Rule sheet explaining dice combinations and gameplay.
- Storage Box – Holds all cards, dice, and scorepad.

Setup
- Shuffle the deck and deal all cards face-down to the players.
- Place the three custom dice in the center where everyone can reach.
- Write each player’s name on the score pad.
- The dealer starts the first round by rolling all three dice.
Gameplay
- After rolling, players discard cards from their hand according to the dice results (see Dice Chart below).
- Some rolls allow you to discard to the center pile, while others force you to pass cards to opponents.
- If the rolling player cannot play, opponents may sometimes give them cards instead.
- The first player to get rid of all their cards ends the round.

Scoring
- The round winner scores 0 points.
- All other players add up the value of cards left in their hand:
- Jacks, Queens, Kings = 10 points each
- Aces = 1 point
- Each player records their round score in the upper box of the score pad, and adds it to their cumulative total in the lower box (like bowling).
- Shuffle the cards and pass the dealer role to the left for the next round.
End of Game
The game ends once a player’s total score reaches 150 points or more. The winner is the player with the lowest score at that time.

| 2 Numbers + 1 Car | Discard all matching cards. | Pass to any other player(s) |
| 2 Numbers + 1 Running Deer | Discard all matching numbers plus any one other card. | Center Pile |
| 1 Number + Deer in Headlights + Car | Discard all cards of the number rolled plus combinations that add up to it (e.g., rolling an 8 lets you pass 8s, 6+2, 7+1). | Pass to any player(s) |
| 1 Number + Deer in Headlights + Running Deer | Discard all odds or evens, depending on the rolled number. Face cards (J-Q-K) cannot be discarded. | Center Pile |
| 2 Deer in Headlights + 1 Number | Lose a turn. | N/A |
| 2 Deer in Headlights + 1 Car | Assign a Lose a Turn to another player, then roll again. | N/A |
| 2 Deer in Headlights + 1 Running Deer | Discard any two cards. | Center Pile |
| 3 Deer in Headlights | You are “frozen.” Pick up the entire center pile. To re-enter, you must roll a Deer in Headlights on your next turn. | Center Pile → Your Hand |
Strategy Tips for Deer in the Headlights
While luck plays a big role in this dice-and-card game, you can improve your chances by keeping a few strategies in mind:
- Watch the Odds – Pay attention to which dice rolls occur most often and plan which cards to hold or discard.
- Hold Onto High-Value Cards Carefully – Try to get rid of face cards (10 points each) as early as possible since they hurt you the most in scoring.
- Use Passing Wisely – When the dice allow you to pass cards to opponents, target the player with the fewest cards left. This slows them down and keeps you in the game.
- Stay Aware of Frozen Players – If someone gets “frozen,” they’ll eventually re-enter. Plan for how many cards might come back into play when they do.
- End Quickly – If you see an opportunity to play multiple cards at once, take it. The faster you end the round, the less time opponents have to dump cards on you.
