How to Play Grab The Mic

Objective

Be the first player to earn the most Mic Tokens by quickly grabbing the mic and correctly singing a lyric that contains the prompt word.

Components

  • 125 Word Prompt Cards
  • A Foam Microphone
  • Mic Tokens
  • (Optional) Game Board with different modes like Race or Battle Royale
  • Player Tokens (for board modes)
  • Instruction sheet

Setup

  1. Shuffle the prompt cards into a draw pile.
  2. Place the microphone within reach of everyone.
  3. Put Mic Tokens nearby for easy access.
  4. If using the board mode, place each player’s token at the starting position.

Game Modes

Choose one before starting:

  • Classic (Mic Grab Only): First to 5 Mic Tokens wins.
  • Race Mode: Move your token along the board as you collect Mic Tokens; first to the end wins.
  • Countdown Mode: Play for a fixed number of rounds; the most Mic Tokens wins.
  • Battle Royale: Players who fail to earn a token in a round are eliminated; last person standing wins.

How to Play a Round

  1. A player flips the top card and reads the prompt word (e.g., “night,” “dance”).
  2. Everyone races to think of a lyric from a real song that includes that exact word.
  3. The first to think of one grabs the microphone.
    • If there’s contention over who grabbed it first, resolve via tiebreaker (like rock-paper-scissors) or group agreement.
  4. The mic-holder sings the lyric out loud—it must be a real, recognizable lyric with the exact word from the card.
  5. The group votes to confirm if the lyric is valid and recognizable.
    • Approved: Singer earns a Mic Token (and advances on the board if applicable).
    • Rejected: The singer receives a “Mute Token,” sits out the next round, or may suffer a setback like moving back on the board.
  6. If no one sings or all attempts fail, discard the card and draw a new one.
