How to Play Monopoly Bid

Game Setup

  1. Shuffle the Property Cards and place them in a face-down pile in the center of the table.
  2. Combine the Money and Action Cards into one deck, shuffle thoroughly.
  3. Deal 5 cards from the combined deck to each player.
  4. Place the rest of the deck face-down to form the draw pile.
  5. The youngest player begins the game as the first auctioneer.

Objective of the Game

The goal of Monopoly Bid is to be the first player to complete three full property sets. Property cards are color-coded and indicate how many cards are needed to form a complete set.

Game Flow Overview

Monopoly Bid is played in a series of rounds. Each round consists of three distinct phases:

  1. Draw a Card
  2. Play Action Cards (Auctioneer only)
  3. Hold a Property Auction

Phase 1: Draw a Card

At the beginning of each round, every player draws one card from the draw pile. If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile to create a new one.

Phase 2: Playing Action Cards

Only the current auctioneer may play Action Cards during this phase, with one exception: Nope! cards can be played by anyone at any time during this phase.

Action Cards Explained

  • Wild!
Use this card as a substitute for any missing property in a set. You cannot use only Wilds to create a set, and once placed, Wilds cannot be moved to another set. Other players may steal an uncompleted Wild! set unless it’s finished and locked.
  • Draw 2!
Instantly draw two cards from the draw pile.
  • Steal!
Take one property card (including Wilds) from another player—as long as it’s not part of a completed set.
  • Nope!
Cancels the effect of any other action card, including another Nope!. Can be played by any player, even out of turn, during the Action phase.

All used Action Cards are placed in the discard pile after their effects resolve.

Phase 3: Property Auction

The auctioneer turns over the top Property Card, revealing it to all players.

How to Bid:

  1. Each player secretly chooses one or more Money cards from their hand (or none at all).
  2. After a countdown (“1, 2, 3, Bid!”), all players reveal their bids simultaneously.
  3. The highest total bid (not the number of cards) wins the auction. The winner discards their bid cards and takes the property.
  4. Other players keep their bid cards.

Tie Rules:

  • If two or more players tie, they may enter a tie-breaker and raise their bids.
  • If the tie remains, no one wins the auction and the Property Card goes to the bottom of the stack.
  • If no bids are made, the Property Card is also placed on the bottom of the pile.

After the auction, the next player clockwise becomes the new auctioneer.

Completing Property Sets

Each Property Card belongs to a color group. The number in the bottom left corner of the card shows how many cards are needed to complete that set.

  • You can use Wild! cards to fill in missing properties.
  • You cannot create a full set with only Wild! cards.
  • Once you finish a set, it is safe and cannot be stolen.
  • Players may trade property cards at any time during the game to complete sets.

How to Win Monopoly Bid

The first player to complete three full property sets wins the game. It’s that simple—and fast!

Optional Tips for Gameplay:

  • Watch your opponents’ sets and block them when they’re close to finishing a group.
  • Use Nope! cards strategically to block key plays.
  • Don’t waste your high Money cards too early—save them for the Property Cards you really need.

Notes/Variations

  • Discarding Money Cards: After winning or losing an auction, players discard the Money cards they used in their bid.
  • Drawing New Money Cards: At the beginning of their turn (if not the Auction Host), players can draw back up to five Money cards from the deck to replenish their bidding power.
  • Fast-Paced and Exciting:  Monopoly Bid offers a quick and engaging gameplay experience compared to the classic Monopoly board game. The blind bidding adds a layer of excitement and strategy, making it a great choice for a fun game night with friends and family.
  • Action Card Variations:  Depending on the specific version of Monopoly Bid you have, there might be different Action cards with unique abilities, adding more variety to the gameplay.

So grab your money and get ready to bid strategically in Monopoly Bid!
