How to Play Onirim

Objective

In Onirim, you play as a dreamer who is trapped in a labyrinth of dreams. The goal is to find all 8 doors in the dream world before the deck runs out, using a combination of strategy and luck. You will need to draw cards, create matching sets, and avoid dangers that could force you to discard valuable cards.

Setup

  1. The Deck – Onirim uses a deck of 64 cards divided into three types: Door cards, Action cards, and Nightmare cards.
  2. Initial Setup – Shuffle the deck and place it face down in the center. Draw 5 cards from the deck and place them face-up in a row, known as the Dreamworld. The top card in the Dreamworld is the card you can interact with.
  3. Prepare the Doors – Place the Door cards (8 in total) face up on the table to keep track of your progress.

Gameplay

The game consists of several turns, each with the following structure:

1. Draw a Card
  • On each turn, draw a card from the deck and add it to your hand.
  • You can have a maximum of 5 cards in your hand. If you already have 5 cards, you must decide whether to play a card or discard a card before drawing a new one.
2. Play a Card

You can play a card from your hand in one of the following ways:

  • Match 3 Cards of the Same Color: You can play 3 cards of the same color (red, blue, green, yellow) to find a door. This is one of the primary ways to collect door cards, and each door leads you closer to your goal.
  • Use an Action Card: Action cards allow you to manipulate the deck and your hand in various ways, like drawing extra cards or reshuffling cards.
  • Discard a Card: If no good play is available, you can discard a card. However, you may need to discard strategically to avoid running out of useful cards.
3. Nightmare Cards
  • Nightmare cards are obstacles that can disrupt your progress. If you draw a Nightmare card, you must discard one of your previously played cards in the Dreamworld. These cards are bad news but can be overcome with careful planning.
4. End of the Turn
  • If you have at least one Door card, you have successfully progressed. If not, you’ll need to continue drawing and playing strategically.

Winning the Game

  • You win if you manage to find all 8 doors before the deck runs out.
  • You lose if you run out of cards in the deck or cannot match three of the same color to find a door.

Optional Rules & Variations

  • Easy Mode: You may choose to start with more Door cards, making it easier to progress through the game.
  • Hard Mode: Add additional Nightmare cards to the deck for an increased challenge.

Tips & Strategies

  • Plan Ahead – Think about your actions and keep an eye on your card hand, as well as the Dreamworld.
  • Use Action Cards Wisely – Don’t waste your action cards early on. They can be essential for manipulating your deck and gaining an advantage.
  • Avoid Nightmare Cards – Be prepared for nightmare cards, and make sure to have backup plans if you lose a key card in the Dreamworld.
