How to Play Rebel Princess

Objective of the Game:

The goal of Rebel Princess Deluxe Edition is to either:

Eliminate your opponents by defeating their factions.
Complete a hidden mission assigned to your princess, which could grant you an automatic victory if accomplished.

You must balance resource management, strategic alliances, and tactical decisions to outwit your opponents.

Components:

Faction Decks: Each player has a unique deck, consisting of units, actions, events, and special cards specific to their faction.
Influence Tokens: These tokens represent a player’s control over territories and political influence, which can affect various actions in the game.
Territory Cards: Represent different regions of the empire, each providing resources and strategic advantages.
Victory Conditions Cards: These cards provide the different ways players can achieve victory (eliminate all opponents, control territories, or complete secret missions).

Game Setup:

Players: 3 or more players, ages 15+.
Game Duration: Approximately 45 minutes.
Starting Resources:
- Territory Cards: Each player draws 2 territory cards. These represent the regions their faction controls at the start of the game.
- Influence Tokens: Each player begins with 5 influence tokens, which can be spent during their turn to influence battles or events.
- Faction Decks: Each player receives their personalized faction deck, shuffled and placed face-down.
First Player: The player who has the most recent birthday goes first, and play proceeds clockwise around the table.

Game Phases:

Each round consists of 4 phases, during which players take turns sequentially:

1. Action Phase:

This is where the majority of the game takes place. During this phase, players perform actions by playing cards from their hand. Actions can be performed in any order, but each player is limited by the number of actions they can take.

Play Cards: Each player can play one card per turn, unless they have an ability or card that grants them extra actions.
- Unit Cards: These are deployed to your territory and represent soldiers, spies, or other loyalists. Units have different attack and defense values, making them essential for both defense and offense.
- Action Cards: These represent various maneuvers or tactics, such as gaining resources, attacking, or forming alliances.
- Event Cards: Event cards can trigger special occurrences such as political upheaval, rebellion uprisings, or sabotage.
Resource Management: Players use their cards to gather resources or gain influence over specific regions. Influence tokens can be spent on event cards, military deployment, or tactical maneuvers. Be sure to keep an eye on your influence balance because running out may hinder your ability to act in future turns.
Building Alliances: You can negotiate temporary alliances with other players. Alliances allow you to combine resources and join forces in battles. However, alliances are fragile, and backstabbing is common. Be sure to assess the value of an alliance and when it’s time to break it.

2. Combat Phase:

Combat in Rebel Princess Deluxe Edition happens when opposing factions clash over a region or territory.

Declare Battle: A player may challenge another to battle if they occupy the same territory or if a special event triggers a conflict. To declare a battle, a player must have at least one unit in the contested territory.
Combat Resolution:
- Unit Strength: Players compare the combat strength of their units. Each unit card has an attack and defense value.
- Play Combat Cards: Both players can play combat cards (attack/defense modifiers) to influence the outcome. This can alter the strength of units, add extra units, or grant special effects.
- Dice Roll: If the players’ total combat strength is equal, the outcome is determined by rolling dice. The player with the higher roll wins the battle.
Winning the Battle: The winner gains control over the contested territory and receives the reward specified on the territory card. The loser must discard some of their units from the territory.

3. Influence Phase:

During the Influence Phase, players assess and adjust their control over various territories. Players can use their influence tokens to sway the outcome of events, challenge other players’ influence, or bolster their position.

Gain Influence: Players can spend influence tokens to increase their control over a territory. This might mean bribes, support from local factions, or gaining public favor.
Territory Control: Some territories give players additional benefits like resources, units, or actions. The more territories you control, the stronger your position becomes.
Political Events: Certain cards or actions trigger political events that can shift influence in unexpected ways. Pay attention to these events, as they can dramatically change the course of the game.

4. End of Turn Phase:

At the end of each turn, players:

Draw new cards to replenish their hand to the starting number (usually 5 cards).
Reassess the board state. This includes checking territory control, alliances, and influence levels.
Resolve any end-of-turn effects triggered by events or other cards.

Special Abilities:

Each princess has a unique ability, reflecting her personality, style, and role within the rebellion. These abilities can alter the game in powerful ways. Here are a few examples:

Princess of Shadows: Gain the ability to swap cards from your hand with those in the deck during any action phase.
Warrior Princess: Double the combat strength of your units in battle but lose influence whenever a battle is declared.
Political Mastermind: When you control more than two territories, you may manipulate political events, changing their effects or outcomes.

Winning the Game:

Players win by:

Eliminating all Opponents: A player who defeats all rival factions and gains control of every territory on the board wins the game.
Completing Secret Mission: Each princess has a secret mission (e.g., sabotage a particular enemy faction, control specific territories, etc.). If a player completes their mission, they win immediately, regardless of other conditions.

Strategy Tips:

Timing is Key: Don’t waste resources or commit too early to an aggressive strategy. Rebel Princess requires careful timing—know when to strike and when to retreat.
