How to Play Ripple


Players: 2–6
Components: Two standard decks of playing cards (add a third if playing with more than 4 players)

Objective

The goal of Ripple is to finish the game with the lowest score possible. Before you begin, decide on a target score—either 100 points or -100 points, depending on your preference. The game ends when a player hits either total.


Setup

  1. Shuffle both decks together and place the cards face down in the center of the table to form the community draw pile.
  2. Without looking, each player places 10 cards in front of them in a grid of 2 rows of 5 cards.
  3. Each player turns any 3 cards face up.

How to Play

  • The first player draws a card from the community draw pile.
    • If they want to keep it, they must exchange it with one of their 10 cards. The replaced card is placed face up above their rows, starting their personal discard pile.
    • If they don’t want the card, they simply place it in their discard pile.
  • Play passes to the left.
    • On your turn, you may draw from either the community draw pile or any player’s discard pile.
    • If you draw and don’t want the card, place it into your discard pile.
  • The round ends when one player has all 10 cards face up. All other players get one final turn before scoring.

Scoring

At the end of each round, players total their points. The game continues until someone reaches 100 or -100 points.

Card Values:

  • Ace = 1 point
  • 2–6 = face value
  • 7 = 0 points
  • 8–10 = face value
  • Jack = 0 points
  • Queen & King = 10 points each
  • Joker = 0 points

Matching Cards

  • If you draw a card that matches a face-up card in your grid, you may replace the card above or below the matching card with the one you drew.
  • Matching cards cancel out and are scored as 0 points.

Block Party Bonuses

  • Two side-by-side matching pairs: subtract 20 points
  • Three side-by-side matching pairs: subtract 40 points
  • Four side-by-side matching pairs: subtract 60 points

How to Ripple

  • If you draw a card that matches one of your face-up cards and the card above or below it is still face-down:
    1. Replace the face-down card with the drawn card.
    2. If the revealed card also matches another face-up card, repeat the process.
    3. Continue “rippling” as long as you can flip face-down cards into matches.

Note: You cannot ripple a card that’s already face-up, and you can only exchange with face-down cards.
