How to Play The World Game (Geography Game)

Game Overview

The World Game is an educational geography card game featuring all 194 countries of the world. Players compete by comparing country statistics or testing each other’s geography knowledge through a variety of challenges.

The goal is to collect all of the cards in play by winning fact comparisons and geography challenges.

The game can be played by 2 or more players and is suitable for both children and adults.

Components

The game includes:

  • 194 country cards
  • World map
  • Country statistics and facts

Each country card contains information including:

  • Country name
  • Flag
  • Capital city
  • Continent
  • Population
  • Area
  • Highest point
  • Number of neighboring countries
  • Location on the world map

Setup

  1. Shuffle all country cards thoroughly.
  2. Deal the cards evenly among all players.
  3. Place the map in the middle of the table
  4. Players place their cards face down in a personal draw pile.
  5. Everyone reveals only the top card of their pile when instructed.

Objective

Win cards from other players until you possess all cards in the game.

Turn Options

On your turn, you must choose one of two actions:

  • Call a Fact
  • Call a Challenge

Calling a Fact

A Fact round works similarly to a traditional Top Trumps game.

Step 1: Select a Category

Look at the country card on top of your pile and choose one statistic from the card.

Possible categories include:

  • Population
  • Area
  • Highest Point
  • Number of Neighboring Countries

Step 2: Reveal Cards

All players reveal their top country card.

Step 3: Compare Values

Compare the chosen category across all revealed cards.

The country with the strongest value wins the round.

Example

If Population is selected:

  • India: 1.4 billion
  • Canada: 40 million
  • Chile: 19 million

India wins the round because it has the largest population.

Step 4: Collect Cards

The winner takes all cards used during that round and places them at the bottom of their pile.

Play then continues with the winner taking the next turn.

Calling a Challenge

Instead of comparing statistics, players may test geography knowledge.

The active player selects another player to challenge.

The challenged player chooses one of the available challenge categories.

Challenge Categories

Continent Challenge

Players must correctly identify the continent where the country is located.

Capital City Challenge

Players must name the country’s capital city.

Flag Challenge

Players must identify the country based on its flag.

Location Challenge

Players must locate the country on the included world map.

Resolving a Challenge

The challenged player attempts to answer first.

If they answer correctly, they win the challenge.

If they answer incorrectly, challenge rules may allow other players an opportunity to answer depending on the version being played.

The successful player wins the cards involved in the challenge.

Educational Variant

Players may focus on a specific continent or region instead of using all 194 countries.

For example, players can practice only:

  • Europe
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • North America
  • South America
  • Oceania

This variation is useful for classrooms, homeschooling, or players learning world geography.

Winning the Game

The game ends when one player has collected all of the cards or when players agree to stop after a set period of time.

The player with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner.

Tips for Success

  • Learn major world capitals.
  • Study country flags.
  • Practice locating countries on a world map.
  • Pay attention to neighboring countries and continents.
  • Use fact comparisons strategically by selecting your strongest statistics.

The more you play, the easier it becomes to recognize countries, capitals, and flags from around the world.
