How to Play Unstable Unicorns
Objective:
The goal of Unstable Unicorns is to be the first player to build an army of 7 unicorns in your stable. Players use different cards to either add unicorns to their stable, sabotage opponents, or disrupt the game in other ways.
Setup:
- Shuffle the deck and deal 5 cards to each player.
- Place the deck face down in the center to form the draw pile.
- Each player places a Unicorn Stable card in front of them. This card starts the player’s stable where their unicorns will be placed.
- Choose a first player randomly and proceed clockwise.
Card Types:
- Unicorn Cards: These are the main cards you use to fill your stable. Each unicorn has a specific trait, like a basic unicorn or special unicorns with additional abilities.
- Upgrade Cards: These cards give you a permanent advantage, like drawing extra cards or protecting your unicorns.
- Downgrade Cards: Use these to hinder your opponents, such as forcing them to discard cards or losing unicorns.
- Instant Cards: These cards have immediate effects, such as forcing an opponent to discard cards or canceling other players’ actions.
- Magic Cards: These cards let you do things like draw cards, steal unicorns, or force opponents to sacrifice unicorns.
Gameplay:
- Start of the Turn: On each player’s turn, they begin by drawing a card from the draw pile.
- Playing Cards: After drawing, the player may play up to 2 cards (unless another card allows them to play more). You can:
- Add a unicorn to your stable.
- Play upgrade or downgrade cards.
- Cast magic or instant cards to disrupt opponents or strengthen your position.
- End of Turn: After playing cards, the player’s turn ends. Play proceeds clockwise.
Special Rules and Actions:
- Neigh: If another player plays a card that affects you, you can play a Neigh card to block the effect. This is a key part of the strategy, as blocking a player’s plans can prevent them from winning.
- Baby Unicorns: Each player starts with a Baby Unicorn in their stable. Baby Unicorns are necessary for certain strategies, and they’re also one of the cards that may be upgraded into a full unicorn.
- Unicorns and Special Abilities: Some unicorns come with unique abilities that might let you draw extra cards, or force opponents to discard cards. Make sure to read the abilities on each unicorn card for strategic use.
Winning the Game:
The first player to have 7 unicorns in their stable wins the game. Be cautious, as opponents may try to sabotage your efforts, but stay focused on building your unicorn army!
Notes:
- Players are encouraged to use strategy and timing to manage their stable and sabotage others.
- The game encourages bluffing and negotiation, especially with instant and magic cards, which add a chaotic element to each turn.
Enjoy building your unstable unicorn army and outsmarting your opponents with strategic moves in Unstable Unicorns!
