How to Play What Do You Meme?

Objective

  • Get the most points (or “meme points”) by having the judge pick your caption card as the funniest pairing with the photo card in play.

Number of Players

3-7 players (works best with 4-6 players)

Components

  • Deck of Photo Cards: These are pictures with meme potential.
  • Deck of Caption Cards: These contain funny phrases to complete the meme.
  • Easel (optional): A stand to display the photo card in the center of the playing area.

Setup

1. Shuffle the deck of caption cards and the deck of photo cards separately.

2. Each player draws a hand of caption cards. The number of cards depends on the number of players and the desired length of the game.

3. Select one player to be the judge for the first round.

Gameplay

1. Judging Phase:

  • The judge for the round draws a photo card from the deck and places it face-up for all players to see.
  • Players (except the judge) select one of their caption cards from their hand to pair with the photo card. The goal is to create the funniest meme combination.
  • Players place their chosen caption card face-down in front of the judge.

2. Judging and Scoring:

  • The judge shuffles the submitted caption cards and reads them aloud, pairing each with the photo card.
  • The judge selects the funniest caption-photo combination, awarding the winning player one point.
  • The player who submitted the winning caption card collects the photo card as a point.
  • The role of judge passes to the next player clockwise for the next round.

3. End of Round:

  • After each round, players draw back up to their hand limit, replenishing their caption cards.
  • Play continues with a new judge for each round.

Winning the Game

  • The game can be played to a predetermined number of points, such as 5 or 10.
  • The first player to reach the designated number of points wins the game.

FAQ

How do I start the game?

A starting player is chosen at random, often by drawing the highest card or rolling a die. That player begins by flipping the first meme card for everyone to caption. Play then continues clockwise around the whole group.

How does the game end?

The game ends when a player has successfully won a predetermined number of rounds, or when the meme card deck runs out. At the end of the game, the player with the most winning meme cards is declared the winner and often receives the trophy or bragging rights for the night.

Can we use our own photos?

Yes! One of the fun twists of What Do You Meme? is that players can use their own photos instead of the provided meme cards. This adds a personal and hilarious real-life element to the game.

How do you play each round?

The judge for each round reveals a meme card with a blank caption. All other players submit their funniest caption card from their hand. The judge face decides which caption is the funniest. The winning caption card is collected by the winner of that round.

What happens after a round is won?

The player who wins the round takes the meme card, and the judge role rotates to the next player. Everyone draws cards to refill their hand, and a brand new hand is dealt to continue the next round.

Are there bonus rules?

Yes! Some groups like to play with bonus rules, such as awarding extra meme cards for particularly clever captions or creating mini-challenges using real-life scenarios. This adds extra excitement to game nights and keeps the whole group laughing.

How do you determine the funniest caption card?

The judge selects the funniest caption card based on humor, creativity, and sometimes how well it ties into the meme card or real-life references. There’s no wrong answer—just what makes the whole group laugh the most!

Can the game be played with a small group?

Absolutely. What Do You Meme? works with both small and large groups. The gameplay remains engaging whether it’s just a few friends or the whole group during party game nights.

What makes a player the overall winner?

The overall winner is the person who has collected the most meme cards by the end of the game, earning the ultimate bragging rights or a trophy if you have one on hand.

Any tips for making the game more fun?

Encourage players to use their own photos, incorporate real-life references, and don’t be afraid to experiment with bonus rules. This keeps every round fresh and hilarious, making each meme card even more memorable.

That’s the basic gameplay of “What Do You Meme?” It’s a lighthearted and creative game that encourages humor and imagination as players compete to create the most hilarious meme combinations. Enjoy the laughter and meme-making!
