How to Play Words Are Hard

Objective:

  • The goal of Words Are Hard is for your team to correctly guess the most target words or phrases before the timer runs out.

Components:

  • Word Cards: Cards with target words or phrases to be guessed. These vary in difficulty.
  • Challenge Cards: Cards that introduce restrictions or challenges to clue-giving (e.g., “Speak in a monotone,” “No hand gestures,” “Only one-syllable words”).
  • Timer: To limit each team’s turn.
  • Score Tracker: To keep track of team scores.

Setup:

  1. Divide players into teams.
  2. Place the Word Cards and Challenge Cards in separate piles face down.
  3. Designate a starting team and a starting clue-giver for that team.

Gameplay:

  1. Start the Timer: Begin the timer for the active team’s turn.
  2. Draw a Word Card: The clue-giver draws a Word Card and looks at the word or phrase.
  3. Draw a Challenge Card: The clue-giver draws a Challenge Card and reads the challenge aloud. This challenge applies to the current round of clue-giving.
  4. Give Clues: The clue-giver must provide clues to their teammates to help them guess the Word Card, while adhering to the restriction on the Challenge Card.
    • Clues cannot be direct synonyms of the word or phrase, and other common taboos apply (as in similar word games).
  5. Teammates Guess: The clue-giver’s teammates try to guess the word or phrase.
  6. Correct Guess: If the team guesses correctly before the timer runs out, they score a point. The team draws a new Word Card, and the clue-giver continues giving clues.
  7. Incorrect Guess or Time’s Up: If the team guesses incorrectly or the timer runs out, the turn ends.
  8. Rotate Clue-Givers: The role of clue-giver rotates to the next player on the team.
  9. Next Team’s Turn: The turn passes to the next team.

Scoring:

  • Teams earn one point for each Word Card they guess correctly.

Winning:

  • The team with the most points at the end of the game (or after a predetermined number of rounds) wins.

Variations:

  • Difficulty Levels: Separate Word Cards into difficulty levels for easier or harder play.
  • All Play: For a more chaotic game, have all teams try to guess the word simultaneously.
  • Charades Option: Some rounds could involve acting out the word or phrase instead of giving verbal clues.
