How to Play 9 Lives
1. Setup
- Players: 3 to 6 players.
- Deck: The game uses a special deck of cards. Each card has a suit visible on the back, adding an element of deduction as players try to remember the cards in play. (If you have a spare deck, you can write on the back of each card in a marker color of your choice, make sure the suits are easily visible!)
- Goal: The aim is to win as many tricks as possible by playing higher cards of the leading suit or trump cards.
2. Card Rank and Suits
- There are four suits, and cards are ranked from low to high (typically 2 through Ace).
- Unique mechanic: The suit is visible on the back of each card, but players must remember the card values in play to deduce which number its likely to be.
3. Dealing
- Each player is dealt a hand of cards. The dealer shuffles the deck and gives cards to each player, face down, without revealing the rank. The back of the cards will show the suit.
4. Bidding
- Players bid on the number of tricks they believe their team can win. The highest bidder sets the trump suit, which beats the other suits.
- If no one bids, the round is considered a “no trump” round, meaning no suit will be stronger than the others.
5. Gameplay (Tricks)
- Trick: The dealer leads the first trick by playing a card face up.
- Following suit: Players must play a card from the suit led if they have one. If not, they can play a card from any suit, and this may include a trump card (if trump is declared).
- Deduction: The twist is that the backs of the cards show the suit, but not the rank, forcing players to deduce which card was played based on the suits and the cards they’ve seen so far.
- Winning the trick: The player who plays the highest card in the leading suit (or trump suit) wins the trick and leads the next round.
6. Scoring
- Each team earns points for the number of tricks they win. The points are awarded based on the number of tricks they successfully win compared to their bid.
- If a player or team fails to meet their bid, they lose the number of points they had bid.
7. Winning the Game
- The game is played over a set number of rounds (usually 5-7), and the team with the most points at the end of the final round wins the game.
8. Strategy
- Memory and Deduction: Pay attention to which suits are being played and try to remember the rank of cards in play.
- Trump Suit: Use the trump suit strategically to win important tricks or block your opponents from winning.
- Bidding Wisely: Make sure your bid matches the strength of your hand. Over-bidding can lead to losing points, while under-bidding might waste opportunities to win more tricks.
In summary, 9 Lives is a fun and challenging trick-taking game where players use deduction and memory to figure out which cards have been played and to win tricks. It combines traditional trick-taking mechanics with a twist, offering a unique playing experience.
