Articulate! is a fast-paced and hilarious party game where players race against the clock to describe as many words as possible for their teammates to guess. In this guide, we’ll explain the rules and provide tips to help you master the art of description and lead your team to victory!

How to Play Articulate
Objective
Be the first team to reach the FINISH segment on the board. You advance by correctly guessing the words your teammates describe.
What You Need to Play
- Game board with central spinner
- Timer
- Playing cards
- Playing pieces (1 per team)
Setup
- Unfold the board and insert the spinner into the center hole.
- Divide players into teams of 2 or more (larger teams are recommended for more fun).
- Example: With 8 players, 2 teams of 4 is better than 4 teams of 2.
- Each team selects a playing piece and places it on the START space.
- Choose which team will go first.
Turn Roles: Describers & Guessers
Each turn, team members take on the roles of Describers and Guessers. Every player must eventually be a Describer.
Team sizes and roles:
- 2 players: 1 Describer, 1 Guesser
- 3 players: 2 Describers, 1 Guesser
- 4 players: 2 Describers, 2 Guessers
(Advanced players can agree to only use 1 Describer per turn regardless of team size.)
How a Turn Works
- Flip the timer to start.
- Describers draw a card and describe the word listed in the category that matches their current board space.
- All teams begin on OBJECT, so that’s the starting category.
- When a teammate guesses correctly, draw a new card and keep describing new words from the same category.
- Keep going until the timer runs out.
- Count the number of correct guesses and move your team’s piece forward that many spaces.
Important: If your turn ends on a CONTROL or SPIN space, follow those special rules (see below).
Description Rules
When describing a word, you must NOT:
- Say how many letters the word has or what letter it starts with.
- Say the word or any variation of it (e.g., for “post” you can’t say “postman” or “postage”).
- Use rhyming or sound-alike clues like “rhymes with…”
You may:
- Act, mime, or gesture (but not mouth the word).
- Choose to pass once per turn.
If a Describer breaks a rule, the team loses the rest of their turn.
Winning the Game
Once a team reaches or passes the FINISH segment, they must complete a CONTROL round to win:
- Their Describers read a CONTROL category clue (see below) to all teams.
- If a member of their team guesses correctly first, they win.
- If another team guesses first, play continues until their next turn when they can try again.
Meanwhile, other teams can still land on SPIN spaces and possibly move them backward.
Special Spaces Explained
CONTROL Segments (White)
- When a team lands here from a regular turn, play pauses.
- The Describers take a new card and describe the CONTROL entry (marked on the card) to everyone playing.
- There’s no time limit.
- The first team to guess correctly wins the bonus turn and plays again (new Describers must be used).
- If the landing team fails to guess it, they stay on the CONTROL space and repeat the process on their next turn.
Tie-breaker: If two teams answer at the same time, a new card is drawn, and the process repeats.
SPIN Segments (Orange or Red)
- If a team lands on a SPIN space (with a line extending into the board’s center), they get to spin for a bonus.
Spinner results:
- Wide green space: Move your piece forward 2 or move another team’s piece back 2.
- Narrow green space: Move your piece forward 3 or move another team’s piece back 3.
- Orange/red space: No bonus. If the arrow lands on a line, spin again.
You cannot move any team past the START space.
Important Exceptions
If you land on them because of a SPIN bonus, no special action is taken.
CONTROL and SPIN spaces only activate if reached through correct guesses.
