How to Play Creature Caravan
Due to the rules being quite long and complex, we’ve done our best to summarize them below. That being said we do recommend taking a look at the official instructions PDF at the top of the page or watching the video tutorial at the bottom.
Objective
In Creature Caravan, players create a tableau of creature cards while journeying through a vast and perilous land. On each turn, players simultaneously place dice on actions from their cards, move their caravan across the map, and play new creature cards. Throughout the game, players compete to trade goods and rare coins in a shared market, explore the enigmatic white towers, and battle ember zombies. The game concludes when a player reaches Eastrey, and the player with the most points at the end wins.
Setup
- Game Board: Place the game board in the center of the play area. The board represents the magical world where players’ creatures will travel, with different paths leading to various destinations.
- Player Tokens: Each player chooses a unique creature token (or color) and places it at the starting point on the board.
- Creature Cards: Shuffle the creature cards and deal each player a hand of 5 creature cards. These cards represent the creatures in the player’s caravan and have unique abilities.
- Resource Tokens: Place the resource tokens (food, magic, and gold) within reach of all players. These tokens are used to advance creatures, heal injuries, and perform actions.
- Objective Cards: Shuffle the objective cards and deal 1 to each player. These cards specify the objectives players must complete to gain victory points.
- First Player: Randomly select a player to go first. Turns will proceed clockwise.
Gameplay
The game is played in a series of turns, each consisting of the following phases:
1. Creature Movement Phase
- On their turn, a player may move one of their creatures across the board, depending on the available resources and creature abilities. The creature can travel a specific number of spaces per turn, and movement is determined by the card or resource used.
- Players may use movement cards (from their hand) to speed up their caravan or move multiple creatures at once. These cards are played during this phase and may allow special abilities such as teleporting or taking shortcuts.
2. Resource Gathering Phase
- After moving, players can gather resources such as food, magic, or gold. These resources are essential for keeping your caravan healthy, advancing through difficult terrain, and trading with other players or NPC merchants.
- Resources are collected by landing on resource tiles on the game board, drawing from resource piles, or trading with other players.
3. Action Phase
- Players may take actions such as:
- Trading: Exchange resources with other players or NPC merchants.
- Healing: Use healing cards or resources to restore health to injured creatures in your caravan.
- Challenge: Engage in challenges or mini-games on the board to earn extra resources or victory points. These may include battles against wild creatures or helping NPCs.
- Objective Completion: Players may fulfill objectives on their Objective Cards by meeting certain conditions, such as reaching a specific location or obtaining a set of resources. Completing an objective grants a victory point or other rewards.
4. Creature Ability Phase
- Each creature in the caravan has a special ability that can be used once per turn. Players can activate these abilities to gain advantages, such as additional movement, drawing extra cards, or avoiding obstacles.
- Creature abilities might be offensive (such as defeating other creatures) or defensive (like healing or shielding against attacks).
5. End of Turn
- The player discards any excess cards beyond their hand limit (usually 7 cards). If they have reached the destination or completed an objective, they announce it and gain points.
- The next player takes their turn.
Winning the Game
The goal of Creature Caravan is to be the first player to accumulate a certain number of victory points, typically by completing objectives and successfully navigating the caravan to its destination. The game ends when a player reaches this target, or the designated number of turns has passed.
Victory points are awarded in the following ways:
- Completing objectives on your objective card.
- Successfully crossing difficult terrain or overcoming major challenges.
- Reaching certain milestones on the game board.
- Trading and collecting rare resources that increase your caravan’s overall strength.
Additional Rules
- NPCs and Foes: Some spaces on the board contain NPCs or wild creatures that players can engage with. These NPCs may offer quests or trading opportunities, while wild creatures may need to be defeated or avoided.
- Injuries: If a creature is injured during the game, it may become slower or unable to move until healed. Injuries can be healed using resources or by resting at specific spots on the board.
- Caravan Size: Players can increase the size of their caravan by recruiting new creatures during the game. New creatures provide additional abilities and can help with movement and challenges.
Conclusion
Creature Caravan is a fun and immersive adventure game where strategy, planning, and resource management are key to success. As players journey through the magical world, they must balance their creature’s strengths, complete objectives, and overcome challenges to be the first to complete their mission and claim victory.
