Official Beach Volleyball Rules

Last Updated on January 22, 2026 by The Official Game Rules Team

Beach volleyball is an exciting and fast-paced sport played on sand, where two teams of two players compete to score points by hitting a ball over the net and into the opponent’s court. The game emphasizes agility, teamwork, and strategy as players dive, spike, and block to outplay their rivals. Unlike indoor volleyball, beach volleyball is played barefoot, and the softer surface allows for spectacular dives and saves. Whether played recreationally or competitively, it’s a thrilling sport that combines athleticism with the fun of being outdoors.

How to Play Beach Volleyball

Beach volleyball is a fast-paced and exciting sport played on sand, where two teams of two players each compete to score points by sending the ball over the net and into the opponent’s court. The game requires teamwork, agility, and strategic play.

Game Setup

  • Court Size: A beach volleyball court measures 16m x 8m, with a net dividing the two sides.
  • Team Size: Each team consists of two players—no substitutions are allowed. Note: in casual play more players can join teams, so long as each team consists of the same number of players.
  • Scoring System: Matches are played in a best-of-three format. The first two sets go to 21 points, while a third tiebreaker set (if needed) is played to 15 points. A team must win by at least 2 points.

Starting the Game

  • A coin toss determines which team serves first.
  • The serving team hits the ball over the net to start play.

Gameplay

  • Each team has up to three touches (pass, set, and attack) to return the ball over the net.
  • Players can use any body part to hit the ball, but open-hand tips (soft touches) are not allowed.
  • The ball must be cleanly hit—no catching, carrying, or throwing.

Scoring Points

  • A point is scored when the ball lands in the opponent’s court or if the opposing team commits a fault (e.g., hitting the ball out, touching the net, or missing a serve).
  • Every rally results in a point (rally scoring).

Serving

  • The ball must be served from behind the end line.
  • Serves can be overhand or underhand, but jump serves are common for power and precision.

Blocking & Attacking

  • Players can block at the net, but touching the net during play is a fault.
  • A blocked ball counts as one of the team’s three touches.

Switching Sides

  • Teams switch sides every 7 points in sets up to 21 and every 5 points in a tiebreaker set.

Winning the Game

  • A team wins by taking two out of three sets.
  • If a match goes to a third set, the first team to reach 15 points (with a 2-point lead) wins.

Beach volleyball is a fun and intense sport that combines athletic skill with outdoor excitement. Whether you’re playing for fun or competing, mastering these rules will help you enjoy the game to the fullest!
