How to Play I Know… You Don’t (Complete Guide)
Game Overview
Can you crack the secret code? In I Know… You Don’t, one player takes on the role of the Rule Keeper and selects a secret rule from a deck. The rest of the players must figure out what that rule is by playing character cards. Every card played gives a clue, and the goal is to be the first to both play all your cards and correctly guess the secret rule.
Number of Players: 3-7 | Ages: 10+ | Play Time: 10 min
Objective
Be the first player to:
- Get rid of all your cards, and
- Correctly identify the secret rule.
Components
- 72 Character Cards
- 60 Rule Cards (with varying difficulty levels)
Setup
- Choose the Rule Keeper – This player reviews the deck of Rule Cards and secretly picks one rule. They keep it hidden from the other players.
- Tip: For your first game, choose an older kid or adult as Rule Keeper and start with a basic rule.
- Deal Cards – The Rule Keeper shuffles the Character Cards and deals 7 cards to each player (not including themselves). The rest form a face-down draw pile.
- Place a Starting Clue Card – The Rule Keeper draws one card from the draw pile that matches the secret rule and places it face up as the first clue. This card starts the “line” of played cards.
I Know… You Don’t Gameplay
Players take turns starting with the person to the left of the Rule Keeper and continue clockwise. On your turn, choose one of three actions:
Option 1: Play One Card
Play a single card from your hand by placing it diagonally next to the current clue line.
- If your card follows the secret rule, the Rule Keeper will place it in the line.
- If it doesn’t, the Rule Keeper will return it to your hand (without comment).
Option 2: Play Multiple Cards
Once you think you’ve figured out the rule, you can attempt to get rid of more cards by playing several at once.
- Lay them diagonally in the correct order.
- If all the cards follow the rule (and are in the correct sequence), the Rule Keeper adds them to the line.
- If any card is incorrect or out of order, the Rule Keeper slides them all back to you.
Option 3: Trade In All Cards
If you believe that none of your cards fit the secret rule, show your hand to the Rule Keeper and other players.
- If you’re correct (none of your cards fit):
- The Rule Keeper discards your hand.
- You draw one fewer card than you turned in.
- Example: Turn in 3 cards, receive 2 back.
- If it was your final card: You get a chance to guess the rule and win! (see below).
- If you’re incorrect (one or more cards fit the rule):
- The Rule Keeper takes one correct card from your hand and adds it to the line.
- You draw one new card to replace it.
- The rest of your hand stays with you.
End of Turn
After completing one of the three options above, your turn ends. Play continues clockwise.
Winning the Game
As soon as a player gets rid of all their cards, they earn the chance to guess the secret rule.
- The Rule Keeper draws two random Rule Cards from the deck, adds the actual secret rule, and shuffles all three.
- These are handed face down to the player who emptied their hand.
- That player silently chooses the card they believe is the real rule and hands it back (no discussion or hints).
- If they guess correctly: They win the game!
- If incorrect: They pass the three rule cards (face down) to the next player clockwise. This continues until someone guesses the rule.
Important: A player can win even if they still have cards in hand—as long as they correctly identify the rule after another player fails.
Additional Notes
- Cards must show three or more characters
- The Rule Keeper should read a few sample rules aloud before the first game so everyone understands what kinds of rules are possible.
- Some rules involve the order of cards being played. Pay attention to both what is played and when.
Rule examples may include:
- Cards must be pink
- Cards must feature food characters (like Taco or Pizza)
- Cards must have odd numbers (1, 3, 5)
- Cards must be Blue or Gold
