How to Play Oh Crud

Objective

Oh Crud is a trick-taking card game with a twist! The goal isn’t to win the most tricks, but rather to avoid the “crud,” which changes each round. Here’s a breakdown of how to play:

Core Gameplay:

  1. Deal: The dealer shuffles the deck and deals cards evenly to each player.
  2. Tricks: Players take turns playing one card face up. You must follow suit if possible. If you can’t, you can play any card.
  3. Winning Tricks: The highest card of the led suit wins the trick. The winner of the trick leads the next trick.
  4. Avoiding the Crud: The “crud” is different in each round, determined by dice rolls. You want to avoid winning tricks that contain the crud.
  5. Scoring: Each round has different scoring rules based on the crud. You’ll get points for each crud card or trick you win. The player with the lowest score after all rounds wins.

Round Variations:

Oh Crud has 6 rounds, each with a unique twist:

  • Round 1: The crud is a suit (e.g., hearts, spades) determined by a color die roll. Avoid winning tricks with cards of that suit.
  • Round 2: The crud is a number (e.g., 5, 10) determined by a number die roll. Avoid winning tricks with cards of that number.
  • Round 3: The crud is both a suit and a number, determined by rolling both dice. Avoid winning tricks with cards that match either the suit or the number.
  • Round 4: The crud is any trick. Avoid winning any tricks at all.
  • Round 5: The crud is the last trick. Avoid winning the final trick of the round.
  • Round 6: This round is different. Players try to be the first to get rid of all their cards. The first player out gets zero points, everyone else gets 50.

Tips and Strategies:

  • Pay attention to the crud: Knowing what the crud is for each round is crucial for making strategic plays.
  • Manage your hand: Try to hold onto cards that aren’t crud and get rid of cards that are.
  • Watch other players: See what cards they’re playing and try to deduce what they might have.
  • Think ahead: Plan your moves in advance to avoid getting stuck with the crud.
