How to Play SongFest!

1. Roll the dice

Roll both the Decade Die and the Category Die to determine which type of question you’ll answer and from which musical era.

2. Draw your question

Take the card that matches the category rolled, then find the question associated with the decade shown on the die.

3. Scan the QR code for a hint

Each card includes a QR code. Scan it with your phone to hear the song clip that provides a clue.

A person is holding a smartphone in the camera app, pointing it at a physical game card that is being held in the other hand. The phone's screen displays a digital view of the game card and shows a question, likely from the game, such as "Q 1 Name That Song!" The card features QR codes that are visible both on the physical card and in the phone's view, which are presumably scanned to access the music or enhanced game play. The box for Song! Fest and some game pieces are visible in the blurred background.

4. Answer to earn points

Give your best answer. If you’re correct, you earn a Record Chip. Keep collecting chips to climb the scoreboard.

SongFest! Rules FAQ

Do I need a paid Spotify account to use the QR song hints?

No. Songfest works perfectly with the free version of Spotify. Just download the app and you’re ready to play.

How can we tell when 10 seconds of the song hint has passed?

Once the song starts playing, tap the track in Spotify. The playback time appears in seconds, making it easy to see when 10 seconds have elapsed.

Do I have to scan the QR hint if I already know the answer?

No. Scanning the QR code is optional. If you’re confident in your answer, you can skip the hint entirely.

Why do some categories have QR codes if they aren’t needed for hints?

They’re included for fun. After a question is answered, players can scan the QR code simply to listen and enjoy the song.

Can we play only certain decades instead of all five?

Yes. The instructions include an alternate setup for decade-limited play. Roll only the Category Die and rotate through your chosen decades each time the group finishes a full round. For example, if using only the ’80s and ’90s, play all players through an ’80s question, then switch to the ’90s, and continue alternating. All other rules remain the same.

What makes Songfest different from other music trivia games?

Most music games focus on a single type of challenge or a narrow era. Songfest offers four unique categories and spans five decades of hits, making it accessible across generations. Plus, its built-in QR song hints via Spotify add an interactive layer you won’t find in most trivia games.

What if we only have two or three players? Won’t we reach 100 points too fast?

If your group is small, you can raise the winning score to extend the game. With 2–4 players, increasing the target to around 140 points works well. Larger groups (6+ players) can stick with the 100-point goal.

Why does the wrong song sometimes appear when scanning a QR code?

Because each card has multiple QR codes, your camera may accidentally lock onto the one above or below the intended code. Try blocking the extra codes with a card or hand, or designate one person as the official scanner to avoid misreads.

How many players can play Songfest?

Songfest works with small or large groups. The recommended player count is 2-12 players.
