How to Play Speed

What You Need

  • Players: 2
  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers)

Speed Setup

Each player is dealt a total of 20 cards, split into two piles:

  • A draw pile of 15 cards (face down)
  • A hand pile of 5 cards (face up in-hand for active play)

Place the remaining 12 cards in the center between both players as follows:

  • Two single cards face down in the center
  • Two 5-card side piles, placed on either side of the two center cards (one pile per player)

At the start of the game, each player flips over one of the center cards to create the two active center piles.

Objective of Speed

The goal of Speed is to be the first player to play all 20 of your cards into the center piles. Once you’ve played your last card, shout “SPEED!” to win the round.

Gameplay Rules

  • Players begin the game holding 5 cards from their personal hand pile.
  • Both players simultaneously flip over one center card to begin play.
  • You may play a card that is one rank higher or lower than the card showing in the center—suit does not matter.
    • Example: If the center card is a 7, you may play a 6 or 8.
  • Aces can wrap around, meaning you can play a King on an Ace or an Ace on a King.

Replacing Cards

  • After playing a card from your hand, immediately draw a replacement from your 15-card draw pile to maintain a hand of 5 cards.
  • You cannot hold more than 5 cards at any time.

Getting Stuck

  • If neither player can make a move, each player flips over a new card from their respective side piles to replace the center cards.
  • If both side piles are exhausted and players are stuck again, gather the center piles, shuffle them, and create new face-down side piles to continue.

Playing Speed

  • There are no turns—both players play at the same time.
  • Only one card can be played to each center pile at a time.
  • The game continues until one player empties their entire hand and draw pile, then calls out “SPEED!” to win.

Speed Rules Summary

  • 2 players only
  • Each player starts with 20 cards: 15 draw, 5 hand
