The Gang is a cooperative deduction game for 3 to 6 players, based on the structure of Texas Hold ’Em. Players attempt to silently determine the correct ranking of all players’ hands after each round, without any communication. The goal is to complete a series of successful heists before triggering too many alarms.

How to Play The Gang
Objective
After all community cards are revealed, players must place ranking tokens in front of themselves to indicate how strong they believe their poker hand is relative to others. If the team correctly ranks all players by actual hand strength after the final card, the team scores a successful heist. Three heists wins the game. If any hand is misranked, an alarm is triggered. Three alarms and the team loses.
Setup
- Use a standard 52-card deck.
- Shuffle and deal two hidden cards (pocket cards) to each player.
- Place four sets of ranking tokens (one for each stage of the round), ranging from lowest to highest, depending on player count.
- Prepare the heist deck, which includes a mix of heist cards and alarm cards.
Game Structure
Each round consists of four phases:
- Pre-Flop (Initial hand knowledge)
- Flop (Three community cards revealed)
- Turn (Fourth card revealed)
- River (Fifth and final card revealed)
During each phase, players privately assess their hand strength based on the current known cards and choose a ranking token accordingly.
Ranking Tokens
- Each player can have one token per phase.
- Tokens are placed in front of yourself only.
- Players cannot speak, gesture, or hint about what cards they hold.
- Tokens may be taken from or returned to the center, but only by the player claiming it.
- The number of tokens available equals the number of players and their rankings (e.g., in a 4-player game, there are tokens for 1st through 4th place).
Important: No token is ever placed on another player, and players may not trade, suggest, or otherwise coordinate.
Revealing and Scoring
At the end of the River phase:
- All hands are revealed.
- The best five-card poker hand is determined for each player using their two pocket cards and the five shared community cards.
- If all players have chosen the correct rank token (e.g., strongest hand has the “1” token, weakest has the last), then the team flips a heist card.
If even one ranking is incorrect, flip an alarm card instead.
Endgame
- The game is played as a best-of-five series.
- Three heists equals a team victory.
- Three alarms means the team fails the mission.
Variants and Extra Content
Optional advanced modules can increase replayability or difficulty:
- Player powers that break standard rules
- Modified win conditions (e.g., requiring 4 heists)
- Rule twists that change ranking logic or communication limits
These variants are entirely optional and may not be necessary for new or casual players.
Player Count and Difficulty
- 3 players: Too few combinations; the game becomes easier and more prone to accidental success.
- 4 to 5 players: Ideal player count; provides sufficient complexity without chaos.
- 6 players: Very challenging; good for experienced groups who want higher difficulty.
Poker Skill Required
- Players only need a basic understanding of poker and its hand rankings (e.g., pair, straight, flush, high card).
- Reference cards are included to assist players who are unfamiliar with hand strengths.
- Children as young as 8 can play, though they may need help understanding the subtleties of relative hand strength.
Summary
The Gang challenges players to read each other’s intentions and interpret hand strength through silent actions alone. With only 12 cards visible at the end of a round and no talking allowed, success hinges on subtle deduction, group intuition, and card knowledge.
